Although I don't quite go to 20 reps, that sounds a bit like my current routine, except that for 3 of my exercises I do 2 sets each. It is these exercises for which I am considering doing a full set to failure, waiting about 15 seconds and then doing another set to failure, and then once again. The other exercises would remain at one set each, with a rest between them not exceeding 75 seconds (somewhere in the 60-75 seconds range). How things have changed. I used to rest much longer between sets, and I almost never did them in the morning. Presently, I am doing them first thing. It's nice to have the workout done and out of the way. Also, the short rest between sets seems to enhance "athleticism." Well, it feels like that, anyway. (And it's all over so quickly!) How many times a week are you presently doing this routine?
I'm doing it four times per week. The actual days are all over the map though. It just all depends on how I feel and what my work schedule, social calendar, and family responsibilities are. In a perfect world, workout days would be Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. But it rarely seems to ever actually work out like that.
Yeah, but nah. I did that for legs today, and decided to leave it there. While I will continue to do this for legs, since I only have one set for them (following body weight squats at speed for cardio), I decided then and there that I ain't gonna do that shit for any of my upper body exercises. I had some difficulty going down a flight of stairs after my workout, let alone up. Besides, Ralph Carpinelli's latest paper suggests that I might be getting unnecessarily into the weeds for no particular beneficial effect.
While that makes sense intuitively, Carpinelli's papers suggest that we may be overthinking it: https://www.elitetrader.com/et/thre...s-to-resistance-training.327646/#post-4909052 https://www.elitetrader.com/et/thre...e-hypertrophy-in-experienced-trainees.350225/ And then there is Richard Winett, another lifelong fitness enthusiast who also engages in exercise research, whom I have quoted in the past as well: https://www.elitetrader.com/et/thre...arbs-make-you-fat.327125/page-12#post-4767003 https://www.elitetrader.com/et/threads/set-extensions.323778/page-6#post-4761385 Perhaps periodic changes in an otherwise solid routine give us a psychological boost more than anything else? Not that psychological boosts don't have any value, since they can be motivating.
It's many years since I attempted serious bodybuilding using HIT and never got close to earlier levels of hypertrophy. I used thrice weekly full body routines to failure and even now I rep slowly and carefully, probably 3 secs concentric and eccentric.
I wanted to revisit this thread because I came across something similar and was wondering if anyone has experience with this method. Myo reps? I have only done this twice this past week, and only with one movement at the end of a workout. First time was with biceps and next with hamstrings. I can say the pump was insane. Your thoughts?
