And New Zealand and Australia have been effectively able to eliminate most COVID cases by the application of proper public health practices including lockdowns, contact tracing, testing, and quarantine for incoming people. Their economies are open for business and students are in school.

New Zealand is giving the vaccine for free to its entire population and to the populations of some nearby countries (Tokelau, Cook Islands, Niue, Samoa, Tonga, and Tuvalu). New Zealand has purchased 18 million vaccine doses from AstraZeneca and Novavax (between the two companies). The start date is the second quarter of 2021 - this is driven by the New Zealand vaccine approval process and the availability of the necessary vaccine doses.

Australia is in a similar situation and is starting vaccinations in March.

It's almost like you predicted the disaster happening today in your home town. It appears the state and local governments in Florida cannot do anything right.

High demand for vaccine appointments in Tampa Bay crashes sign-up sites, jams phone lines
    https://www.wfla.com/community/heal...orough-county-phone-lines-jammed-in-pinellas/

Tampa Bay’s vaccine rollout got off to a rocky start on Monday with websites crashing, phone lines going down and sites reaching full capacity.

In Hillsborough County, people trying to make an appointment to get vaccinated online were told the website was not available.

In a tweet, the county health department said its registration system and phone center were experiencing service interruptions and that delays were to be expected. The county added later that appointments were still available.

The demand for vaccines led to jammed phone lines in Pinellas County. As of this writing, the health department’s phone lines are still down.

Both counties began taking appointments for the vaccine on Monday. Hillsborough County plans to distribute about 1,500 doses at four locations across the county. People can make a reservation by calling 888-755-2822 or visiting hccovidshot.as.me.

Pinellas County residents can contact the health department at 727-824-6900 or call their COVID-19 call center at 866-779-6121. To register, they should visit pinellas.floridahealth.gov and follow instructions.

News Channel 8 has reached out to both health departments for comment. This story will be updated once we hear back.

    =======================

North Carolina is following CDC guidance. We currently are in Phase 1a which is "Health care workers fighting COVID-19 & Long-Term Care staff and residents" Phase 1B starts tomorrow in N.C. for "Adults 75 years or older and frontline essential workers". County health departments have already signed up people over 75 for Phase 1B and are contacting them for their appointment date & time. We are not seeing overnight lines and online/phone chaos in our state. Why can't Florida follow a successful example.

Just call me Carnac the Great.

Who could have predicted that appointment demand for vaccines would be more than the system could handle?

Just about everyone with an IQ over 120.

Can you explain why most other states don't have long lines of elderly people waiting overnight just to be told there are no vaccines available? Can you explain why most other states have provided the elderly with appointments and don't have their health department phones & websites failing? Can you explain why Florida does not have competent state government?

When you say "most other states" don't have long lines, either in person or online (I combined both of your idiot questions into one for simplicity sake) you apparently did the research to see which states have issues fulfilling requested vaccines and which are not able, right? Because you're able to make the comment about "most" not having the problem.

Or is it that the media (or your interest) lies in reporting that Florida is having a problem, but not reporting anyone else is? Because I can tell you for certain that isn't true. But you go first. Which states are NOT having any issues fulfilling requested vaccinations? List them, please.

I can't explain this, because it isn't true. Just because you think the state government is incompetent doesn't mean everyone else does. Also, given that Florida has the second highest net population gain for 2020...there must be some reason people want to live here and it can't be all about the sunshine.

So let's take a look at a basic step that North Carolina and other states did which Florida failed to do....

Knowing that there would be a large call volume to state & county health departments asking for COVID vaccine information and to be added to the vaccination list... North Carolina had health departments outsourced their phone calls for COVID information in early December to third party contact center businesses who could provide the information, schedule appointments, provide appointment call backs, and handle the call volume. These included ACS (Affiliated Computer Services Inc. - Xerox), Maximus, and other vendors. This is a very obvious step that Florida should have taken and followed the lead/recommendations of other states.

Every state is enduring a lack of available vaccine doses.... but at least other states have properly set up a system to avoid long lines, failed websites, and jammed phone lines -- and are already have been properly scheduling upcoming appointments since December.

So what states are properly doing it and what states aren't? When you said "a basic step that NC and other states did"....I'm sure you have a list of the states that did this, right? I mean, you're saying they did. In your previous post, "most states" didn't have the problems Florida had.

If Florida's government were so poor, why would so many want to live here?
