It was discussed before, and I reject your comment unequivocally both then, and now. If you are going to make a statement that COVID is worse than other like diseases because of its effects, and then design policy designed to prevent these effects, you need to either:

    1. Show that COVID is worse than the other diseases that did not have us instituting policy before

    or

    2. Tell us why we were fine before, but not now suddenly with the same risk.

I'm not asking for asking sake. Which I said before (and you probably ignored because you don't have a comparison).

If all your kvetching on COVID was just so you could hide under your blanket and isolate yourself, I'd not give a shit. But you're trying to get me to follow along. You're trying to put my livelihood at risk. You're forcing me to comply. So tell me why I have to. And tell me why I didn't have to before.

And you are unable to do this, and so, you will never have large portions of the population on board, nor will you ever convince them that there is a reason for them to comply.

You just don't have the data. And the science is about the data. Thus, you don't have the science. You just have narrative.

Once again... read my earlier statements. Medical studies are not done comparing unlike diseases. The study serves no purpose. What you are asking for to deflect is ridiculous. Why don't you stop denying that many COVID cases have significant long term health effects. You want to magically assert that we should only be concerned about deaths -- this is not true.

Please show me where I said COVID cases do not have any significant long term effects.

I'll save you the time, you can't. I never said it. The fact that COVID can cause long term effects on a small amount of people isn't being disputed. I am disputing that it is considerably worse (or just worse) than other types of illnesses that are both contagious and have been around forever. And you can't show me that it is.

Maybe some day the data will show this. If it does, I will accept it. If it does not, you will likely make more excuses.

"DeSantis for the win" --- let's keep schools open. Just ignore the community spread. Keep in mind the U.S. standard is that schools should not be open when the COVID testing positivity rate in the local community is above 5%. All of Florida is above 5%.

Pointing to closing 'blunder,' DeSantis says schools should bring struggling students back in-person
    https://www.tallahassee.com/story/n...is-florida-schools-stay-open-2021/6466124002/

Florida public schools will remain open in 2021 and families will continue to have the option to keep students at home during the COVID-19 pandemic, Gov. Ron DeSantis announced on Monday.

But the news came with one caveat, that parents with students who are struggling academically in remote learning situations will be notified by their school districts and the students will be required to return to in-person instruction — unless the family again actively elects to keep the student at home.

The caveat is part of a new emergency order issued by Richard Corcoran, Florida's commissioner of education.

In the order, which is dated Nov. 30, Corcoran writes that schools must provide written notification to parents about the students' academic struggles, and parents must provide a written receipt of their intent to keep their students at home.

At a press conference held at a Kissimmee elementary school, DeSantis called closing public schools during the coronavirus pandemic the "biggest public health blunder" in modern U.S. history and called his detractors "flat-earthers." He said the effects of closing schools will be felt for years.

"Virtual learning is just not the same as being in person," DeSantis said of public education.

The announcement comes as Florida has seen a surge in cases in past weeks
and is poised to cross the million-case mark on Tuesday.

An in-person connection, many educators and parents say, is often the linchpin for academic success. It's why, despite the pandemic, a growing number of districts are requiring students struggling online to attend class in person, if that's an option.

But an explosion of new COVID-19 infections challenges that effort. Already, the nation's new COVID-19 spike is poised to send hundreds of thousands of students who were in school at least part time back to 100% remote learning.

New York City – where some 300,000 public school students are receiving some in-person instruction – is quickly approaching the community spread threshold that would trigger another shutdown. Mayor Bill de Blasio on Friday told parents to prepare for school buildings to close as early as Monday.

Earlier this month, county officials in Indianapolis ordered all public and private schools to close and return to online learning by Nov. 30 for safety reasons, a move that affects around 200,000 students.

And a number of urban districts that have operated fully online since the start of the year, such as San Diego, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Detroit, Anchorage, Alaska, and several big, suburban districts outside of Washington, D.C., are further delaying plans for in-class learning because of rising infections.

Florida is taking a different approach with DeSantis reiterating that in-person school is critical for students and parents.

Florida's public schools initially closed because of the pandemic in March. Leon County public classrooms reopened Aug. 31 with an option for families to enroll students in a school's Digital Academy to learn from home.

Corcoran echoed DeSantis' remarks and said that scientists who said that opening schools would be a "death march" for children have been proven wrong as schools across the globe have reopened.

Healthcare officials, including in Leon County, long have advised that though children seem to not become as ill from COVID-19 as adults, they still are able to spread the virus.

Absolutely fantastic decision by DeSantis. Children aren't under threat from this virus. Additionally, anyone who wants to can still virtual learn. Most choose not to.

Sorry, Chicken Little. No one believes you.

    "So much winning"

Florida Mayor Slams Gov DeSantis for Following 'Fringe' Doctors As State's COVID Cases Surpass 1 Million
    https://www.newsweek.com/florida-ma...-states-covid-cases-surpass-1-million-1551618

Forida Governor Ron DeSantis was blasted by Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber for his "dangerous" response to the COVID-19 pandemic as the state eclipsed 1 million cases on Tuesday.

Gelber made the remarks during an interview with CNN's Jim Sciutto. The Democratic mayor said that the Republican governor had ignored credible science about the virus in favor of "a convenient ideology" that allows him to ignore public health restrictions shown to reduce the spread of infection, like mandating the wearing of face masks.

"He's sort of adopted an ideology, a convenient ideology, but not one grounded in science," Gelber said. "He's been receiving advice from these fringe scientists and doctors who pursue the wrong kinds theories on how to deal with this and the result is we have virus spread throughout our state."

"He's wrong and he just won't change direction, to the detriment of our residents, frankly," added Gelber.

The mayor said that DeSantis was taking advice from Dr. Scott Atla
s, President Donald Trump's former pandemic adviser who resigned on Monday while wishing the incoming Biden administration "all best," along with other physicians who advocate a "fringe herd immunity" strategy.

COVID-19 research has led most medical experts and epidemiologists to conclude that herd immunity may not be achievable by allowing infections to spread uncontained, while pursuing the strategy before a vaccine is widely available would likely result in millions of unnecessary deaths.

Gelber said the he had been forced to resort to "workarounds" to contain the virus in Miami Beach due to DeSantis fully opening the economy, but refusing to issue a mask mandate and blocking local restrictions even as cases surged out of control in the state, calling the governor's actions "the worst of all worlds."

"What Governor DeSantis is doing is not simply not helping us, he's doing the opposite," Gelber said. "He's actually telling people they don't need to wear masks. I get emails every day, angry emails from people saying 'why don't you listen to the governor? Why are you forcing us to wear masks? Why don't you be quiet?' And that's just dangerous, frankly."

"All of the credible science says that mask usage is the best way to protect yourself," he added. "And, in fact, to open up the economy safely."

When asked about strategies for distributing COVID-19 vaccines that are expected to released soon, the mayor said that he had faith in experienced vaccine experts who "do this for a living day in and day out" and expected that DeSantis would also follow their expertise in formulating and executing an effective plan.

Florida became the third state to surpass 1 million COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, joining Texas and California. The state reported an additional 8,632 cases, bringing total cases to 1,008,166. There are currently 55,197 Floridians hospitalized with the virus, while 18,679 have died since the pandemic began.

(As a comparison point, North Carolina currently has 2,033 people hospitalized with the virus. We have half the population of Florida. Florida has has 55,197 Floridians hospitalized with the virus. Great job, DeSantis)

DeSantis could walk on water and Gelber would be screaming "Look, he can't swim!" He's probably the only one out there who hates DeSantis more than you.

Would you kindly show me your data source that says Florida currently has 55,197 people hospitalized with the virus?

Because what I see: CUMULATIVE HOSPITALIZATIONS
