Oregon officials ask businesses to check COVID-19 vaccine status

Oregon’s state health officer said Friday businesses will be asked to either enforce mask policies or check whether customers have been vaccinated against COVID-19.

The comments by Dr. Dean Sidelinger came as he said the state was still working on releasing more detailed guidance for businesses. Late Thursday, Gov. Kate Brown said Oregon would immediately follow direction from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention earlier in the day which eased indoor mask-wearing and social distancing for fully vaccinated people.

Brown said Oregonians who are fully vaccinated no longer need to wear masks or social distance in most public spaces, adding the state would provide more specific instructions soon.

Sidelinger said for now, it’s up to businesses to determine a person’s vaccine status.

“We would anticipate that an establishment or business will have to have a system in place for asking about vaccines status and verifying that. Right now, I would anticipate that would be seeing a card with the individual’s name, the vaccine site and date they got it. It could be a picture of the vaccine card or record from provider on their phone, but just a way of seeing that,” he said.

The federal guidance issued Thursday still calls for wearing masks in crowded indoor settings like buses, planes, hospitals, prisons and homeless shelters, but will help clear the way for reopening workplaces, schools, and other venues.

Currently, people over the age of 12 are eligible for COVID-19 vaccines in Oregon.

  2. If they just ask if you have been vaccinated, and you were vaccinated against measles or flu at some point in the past then "yes" is a a truthful answer.

Other good answers might be "Yes, I have been vaccinated and I would like to order a burger. How do I know that it does not have salmonella?"

If someone asks me if I’m vaccinated I tell them to mind their fucking business.
Then I ask to see some proof they don’t have herpes.

You basically outline the actual problem -- there is no way for U.S. businesses to enforce this with their customers. Unless we have a "vaccine passport" with a QR code on our cell phones (similar to Israel) there is not way for a business to know if you are being honest when you say yes you been vaccinated (or pull out a fake vaccination card).

You probably have Herpes 1 in your system as we speak. Statistically speaking, it is most likely. It's been around for millions of years. Now THERE'S a virus that just won't go away! BUt thankfully, it is not transmitted by singing or breathing or stuff like that.

You gotta' swap spit for it.

  8. Most businesses are just going to keep the mask rule in place for their employees and general well being probably for another month or so for more time for more vaccinations. CDC recommendation makes sense if everyone in a place is vaccinated.

Since we know that is not true and it really is not worthwhile to ask for proof, I can see businesses simply continuing with same protocols until end of June.

Went to get a hair cut yesterday. Stylist told me I didn't have to wear my mask if I was comfortable. So I didn't.

Afterwards, went to Publix. Saw people without a mask and asked the girl "do we need to wear a mask still?" She said "if you're vaccinated, you don't need to." I am not vaccinated but said "outstanding!" and took my mask off and went shopping. Great experience.

Tomorrow we meet for our company to discuss it, and the standing is going to be that if you don't want to wear a mask because you're vaccinated, you don't have to. We won't be asking for proof of vaccination.
