Let me know if you still disagree that the actual issue at hand does not heavily take into account race. Below is the article I came across before it was ever mentioned here at ET. It captures in my opinion a lot better the actual issue than the article posted in this thread. Race is the whole idea behind this issue. Saying race does not play a role is simply incorrect. SAT to Give Students ‘Adversity Score’ to Capture Social and Economic Background https://www.wsj.com/articles/sat-to...re-social-and-economic-background-11557999000
A response to some of the other posters in this thread who have said that rich people are smarter and harder working (vs having some social advantages) as an argument against the use of this score.
The scoring algorithm does not take race as a factor for determining hardship. This is stated in the article.
Correct that it is not stated in the article and CBS and CNN make as sure as hell that it is not included. If you did not grasp yet that we are in the age of media manipulation then I can't help you. The graphs (which show race as clearly mentioned as Asian, Blacks, Caucasian, Latino) in the WSJ article are DIRECTLY taken out from the communique that the test board published and on which the director commented and referred to in several interviews. Do some background search and you will find my claim confirmed
And it would be nice if you actually did the work and checked on this and came back and admitted that I was right. One of the worst things in this age are politically motivated people who post and chat away and each time they are contradicted by facts they are never seen again and never apologize or admit they were incorrect
If you had a statement from the Wall Street journal that clearly stated “race is used to determine the score” you could easily post that instead of making me go on a wild goose chase.
re race on this thread At school, I had a black friend named Khalid, I think his background was Somalian. This guy was probably one of the most brilliant people I ever knew. He just picked stuff up so quick and was definitely much smarter than me. He dropped out of school in the eighth grade to work to support the family. I have no idea what became of him, but I can bet there are numerous examples of people like this who fall through the cracks and don't get the academic help they need in order to succeed in these tests. I would wholeheartedly allow some way to capture this dude's background and give him the help he needs to have a chance at success. On the other hand, my white friend Brian, whose dad was high up at IBM was dumb as a hammer and now has a PhD in computer science. I read his thesis it is stupid. Last publication was in 2011 and he works in academia as a lecturer, limited research. There is no doubt in my mind that this guy got by on his "whiteness". Even then, I'm not saying black vs white, I'm saying find talent and give them opportunity. It's better for society overall.
I do know, but there are alternatives other than Liberal Arts. Besides if one of my kids came up with such an ambition, which is not too far fetched, I might look into 50k a year options, if that leaves them more doors open. My impression of Arts and literature students in Europe is their studies have been a net negative, it's like they spent years getting their brain drilled. Their mindset is wired to tit sucking subsidies and other people's taxes and their company hardly bearable. Their employment options are miserable and they don't have the mentality to make it as entrepreneurs. They would have been better off skipping college altogether.
