I wish I got into daytrading instead of going to college after high school. Could have walked away set for life, then went to college and had a grand old fun time. Really nowdays a Business degree is worth sh*t unless you want to be in a dead-end soon to be offshored corporate job. If you are Ivy League, it does not matter what your degree is, those schools are all about connections. I feel like college experience was a fun & productive time, at the least, that is where I met my friend who got me into the industry I'm in now. But when it comes to looking the cirriculum and the credits required for getting a degree, 80% of them are a waste of time. Pointless theories taught by individuals who have no idea about how the real world works or how money is made or what the corporate world is really all about. BTW my one friend whom I mentioned, dropped out with ONE semester left to go. He managed to build a business that is growing 50-100% a year and doing millions in sales (probably netting a mil in profits this year as well). Like I said, go to college for the social atmosphere, for the fun times, to meet people and possibly learn some stuff you are interested in, whether in class or outside. But don't expect the college designed degree programs to teach you much of anything useful.
Hi vastox I've made slight edits to your posts to help illustrate my points, but otherwise I haven't re-written what you've said. (1) I honestly wish you good luck with that one, if it's going to work for you, fine. There are plenty of seriously over-educated people in my department with the same hopes and dreams, one of them, a very creative, intelligent guy, who I personally like and respect. Got his degreee from Harvard too. But considering the, for lack of a better way to describe it, insane politicking, backstabbing, in-fighting and petty manipulations that go on in the workplace, I'm not too sure he's going to want it even if he does get ahead (hey, it could happen, there's just a very low percentage of it). And there's just no way that pittance of money could make it worth it ... they give you just enough money to have nice things and get caught up deeper in the rat maze (trust, I have lots and lots of examples). (2) As far as point #2 is concerned, you aren't talking to investors, you are talking to traders, if you pay attention to their posts you'll see that while everyone is doing something different, we all know how to make money ... the truth of the matter is that once we break the 1st million per annum, then we can start thinking about the limitations of our system(s), but until we reach that point it's all upside with no ceiling ... now tell us what job you can get with your four year degree, or masters without connections, for that matter has that kind of potential? :eek: I P.S. and after you get the 1st mil, the answer is to diversify your markets, strategies and tactics if you want to continue flying solo and growing, and/or develop a fund made up of the money of friends and family (hey, it starts at home) if you want to bring in OPM. P.P.S. btw, all the other traders on the board know this.
I met all my friends at Church.. They had their degrees and "GOOD JOBS," I had my Businesses.... I was never envious of them, but they sure were of me....
If you do not work for yourself, no matter how high up the ladder you go in the corporate world...there will always be someone's ass you must kiss to continue to receive your check. No matter how good your job is, or how many degrees you have....if you are not self-employed, there will always be plenty of ass for you to kiss. Remember that before you look down on others who do not have degrees..... When you work for someone else, your lot in life to is to kiss someone's ass to continue to be paid, and if you don't kiss the asses of those above you...you will be cut off and can then join the ranks of the "unwashed" working class you felt so superior to...although the self-starters will be the ones enjoying their lives and their freedom. No need to throw stones, there are pros and cons to each approach. It is a personal choice. it does not make someone inferior because they do not have a degree. Life is not so linear.
One point I hadn't seen mentioned here re degree. If you don't have a degree it is highly likely your kids won't value the degree either. Your self employed business may become obsolete or your children may not be interested. They may not have your drive or ambition. How will you stress the importance of a degree to your children?
My kids would be raised to make their own informed decisions. But to more accurately answer your question- I do not plan on having kids. This world is too fucked.
Good points nutmeg.. ...further, I'd like to add, for those that think by running your own business that you'll avoid "ass kissing", you have no clue what it takes to run a business then. Business owners have to essentially be the biggest "ass kissers" to their customers. If you as a business owner don't want to "ass kiss", then you won't run a very successful business for very long. If youronly reason to avoid getting degree and starting your own business is to avoid the responsibility of "answering to someone", well then you're in for a rude awakening. One way or the other, you're "answering to somebody", whether it's your boss at work, or your boss as in your customers. In fact, being a business owner is probably going to require a significantly larger effort to make sure that customers are satisfied through "ass kissing".
