YM in a Can

Discussion in 'Journals' started by ElectricSavant, May 3, 2004.

  1. I use a DOM type of Waterfall/Ladder platform. I leave it open 24 hrs a day along side the free realtime "snapshot type" charts at FuturesSource. This DOM (depth of market) platform has audible alerts when one of the brackets execute, so if you buy wireless speakers or real long cables you can put speakers in the bedroom for 24 hr trading (if your not married).

FuturesSource has an auto-refresh feature, that can be set to every 5 minutes.

I have two 21" monitors so there is not shortage of screen real estate.

  2. Here is an example of the chart, nothing fancy.

P.S. Does this work, or is the picture too small?

  3. Short reversal brackets 10006, 9944.

    10006 S H3
    9964 L Current position
    9944 S L4

P.S. When I go live with this there will undoubtably be slippage, so I wouldn't count this trade as a win at all. (2 days to make 7 YM points)

P.S.S. There have been no changes to the equation since inception. The only changes have been to the WAY it is traded. The only change to this "24 hr. system" so far is that at Friday's close the system goes flat. I simply post the attachment to show the total profit for the day and from inception. I will change the name of the attachment to Levels & Stats with the next post.

  4. At night fills will even be a bigger problem with slippage. At some brokerages you are able to specify a stop limit factor so that if the price trades over/through your stop it will be submitted as a limit order instead of a market order. This slippage issue must be tested, so I will need to post when I go live in a month to further test this.

Money management is up in the air, I have no idea what to do. I need more data as NihabaAshi pointed out. There have been no backtestors willing to step up to the plate besides one(sammy12). Apparantly, this is hard to backtest or there is no interest in this journal from the backtesters, because this does not test positive or at least breakeven.

    Michael B.

P.S. I am happy with the results so far, but how would you characterize the market just now, compared to the past? The only way to know is a comprehensive backtest. I do not believe the YM has been around very long ($5.00-1 or 2 years?) and in the beginning there was not enough volume and it was not representitive of what it trades like today.

  5. 1/2 Bracket LONG reversal at 9964

    Michael B.

P.S. I can see now how this system can kill profits on tight brackets. The levels can reverse back and forth all day. We shall see.

    ES -

Why such the interest in backtesting? What would that prove/disprove?

IMO, the only important thing is how it works in the present - and if it is working , then you should use it while it is working. And stop when it stops working. It doesn't really help to know that 2 years ago it worked or didn't work, does it?

  7. Well, Yes I used to believe that. But I need to see how the levels react in as many different environments as possible. But you are also correct. Advanced traders are able to react and change based on NOW.

    Michael B.

P.S. This is a static system based on previous days range, so my meaning is to discover as many of the possibilities and to discover the probabable outcome.

P.S.S. I would never trade this without Money Management.

  8. It has been suggested to me when I go live to start a new Journal named, "Live and in the Can"

  9. mr savant,

have you considered that you are simply achieving the same results as other pivot point mechanical systems? I see no real advantage of the entry points other than quick scalps but you will see that if you used that strategy this morning on the ES you would have been stopped out. you don't strike me as a scalping kinda guy. i could be wrong?

keep at it fella i like your research and willingness to post the live results here in a public forum.

  10. How do I get stopped out in a stop and reverse system? You are correct about my style. Though if I had the time, I would not mind scalping. "Monitored Automation" or "Broker Assisted Trading" is what I need, especially while holding down a job and trading 24hrs.
