Netanyahu wants to "invent constant justifications for the continuation of aggression, expanding the circle of conflict, and sabotaging efforts made through various mediators and parties".

Previous negotiation efforts had stalled in part because of Hamas's demand for a lasting ceasefire and Netanyahu's vows to crush its remaining fighters in Rafah.

Hamas in a statement insisted it maintained a "positive and responsible approach" and said it was determined to reach an agreement.

The statement mentioned that Hamas's key demands include "a complete end" to the fighting, Israeli withdrawal "from the entire Gaza Strip, the facilitation of the return of displaced people, the intensification of relief efforts", reconstruction efforts and a prisoner-hostage exchange deal.

Netanyahu has vowed to invade Rafah regardless of any truce, and despite concerns from the United States, other countries and aid groups.

At the start of the war, Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant said his country would impose a "complete siege" blocking food, water and other supplies.

Israeli defence minister tells US counterpart Israel had ‘no choice’ over Rafah offensive
Yoav Gallant has told his American counterpart, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, that Israel was left with “no choice” but to launch its offensive on Rafah.

In an overnight phone call, Gallant updated Austin on Sunday’s rocket barrage launched from Rafah on an Israeli army position on the border, his office said.

The minister is reported to have blamed Hamas for refusing any proposal that would allow for a temporary ceasefire proposal.

Gallant’s office said Gallant then told Austin, “There was no choice left, and the meaning was the start of the Israeli operation in Rafah.”

Sadly this appears to be just a delaying tactic from Hamas. They have not agreed to even the basic conditions demanded by Israel and international-partners for a ceasfire. For example, Hamas is unwilling to hand over a list of hostages who are still alive -- which is the basic starting point.

Israel says Hamas offer does not meet essential demands, will keep negotiating, is moving forward with Rafah op

Donald Trump says he is willing to go to jail for not complying with gag order

By Misty Sever May 6, 2024
Former President Donald Trump said he would be willing to go jail over his repeated violations of a gag order on Monday, stating that the "Constitution is much more important than jail."
Trump has been stuck in a New York courtroom for the past two weeks, but has been fined for violating a gag order 10 times so far, which was imposed by New York judge Juan Merchan. The most recent verdict occurred Monday, and Trump was ordered to pay $1,000 for attacking the jurors in his hush money trial.
“This judge has given me a gag order and said you’ll go to jail if you violate it,” Trump told reporters in a video posted to Truth Social. “And frankly, you know what, our Constitution is much more important than jail. It’s not even close. I’ll do that sacrifice any day."

Hamas accepts cease-fire proposal, but Israel still strikes Rafah

On Monday, Hamas unexpectedly accepted a Qatari-Egyptian cease-fire proposal for Gaza, which Israel says it is examining. The news came on the heels of a weekend evacuation order for parts of Rafah. But rather than stalling the invasion, the Israeli war cabinet “unanimously decided” to continue with plans for the invasion and launched strikes in Rafah late Monday.

The diplomatic breakthrough – which followed mass weekend protests demanding the Israeli government bring home the remaining hostages held in Gaza – was meant to put pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The United States and other key allies had also been pressuring Israel to refrain from attacking Rafah.

“Netanyahu is trying to have it both ways — continue talks in Egypt by sending a team while proceeding with attacks into Rafah,” says Eurasia Group analyst Greg Brew.”The door hasn't closed on a deal yet.”

Israel’s war cabinet said it would continue to work on a deal, sending delegates to negotiate aspects it still finds objectionable (the deal’s details are not publicly known).

We’re watching for Hamas’ reaction to the Rafah attacks, and how it affects any longer-term cease-fire prospects.

The United States has told Qatar that it should expel Hamas if the group continues to reject a cease-fire with Israel, an agreement the Biden administration deems vitalto easing the upheaval gripping the Middle East, a U.S. official told The Washington Post.
