I don't mean to raise/play the race card, so don't take it like that, but the US was built on almost-free LABOR, up until 1865. It's why we keep the borders OPEN.
But US inc really took off on oil.. one barrel of oil is equivalent to 25000 man hours of labour in energy terms.. and it costs a single dollar to pull it out of the ground compared to the wages you'd have to pay for those 25 thousand hours of manual labour

Somewhat off-topic, but I was listening to a radio program that was announcing all these things that McCain was older than. Was hilarious. Like "McCain is older than Israel" and "McCain is older than the atom bomb"... I can't remember, but some were absolutely hysterical.
