I had that linksys and paid close to $100 and it was ok for a few years but then turned into a pos and would drop my internet and gave poor signal strenth and I constantly had to reset it. I replaced it with this for $40 www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=2304416#ShortReviewTitleBar was easy to set up and have had it running nonstop for 22 months straight without a problem and it has twice the range that the linksys had. A few of my friends have purchased this as well and they are have been trouble free. It also runs a heck of a lot cooler than my linksys did.
I had mis-typed. I meant to say: As for wireless security: definitely wireless is less secure than wired.
What is your knowledge level? If you know what you do, scrap all the end user stuff and get something powerfull. Something built on Mikrotik RouterBoard. This gives you flexibility in hardware, and you may be surprised by the price, too Dont get feared by having to buy a motherboard. If you go to a decent distributor they will help you order and acutally will pu together a complete solution for you, so you get a nice box. RouterOS has the advantage of being prtty much as flexible as you may need. I know ISP's urnning this as core OS, supporting all major protocols and a lot of interesting features.
Since the last post, let me step back and ask this question: PIPMAGIC: Are you setting up "your network" for your home (home-based office)? Or for your commercial type of office? What is the price range that you are looking at? Under $100 or >$3000?
if you run dd-wrt you can change the transmit megawatts on your router - Stock Linksys is something around 21mW and dd-wrt puts it at 71mW default... you have a range option of 1-251mW as well as options to change the Beacon Interval (from 10ms-65535ms) and you can change the ACK Timing/sensitivity range as well. Just watch the cooling if you jack the wireless settings up.
Dude, it is MILLIwatt, not MEGA watt. If oyu even put up a 1 watt wireless you are in trouble. A Megawatt wireless router would probably fry the brain and balls of everyone a hundred meters away and cause serious damage much further. MEGA watt is MW (note the big M). Milliwatt is mW (note the small m). MEGAWATT is Microwave (note that this is just 1000-2000 watts - an a Megawatt is 1 million watts). That is "steak fried in a milliscond". For anything serious I strongly again suggest Mikrotik stuff. Cheap (SERIOUSLY cheap) and Powerfull. You can run 20km links if you need to, and you have everything in the software it takes to build a serious ISP. Really - their feature set is crazy.
Perhaps, WinstonTJ is suggesting to become a part of SETI. I'm sure extraterrestrials outside the Solar system are having trouble picking up signal from paltry home wireless O.P.'s neighbours have.
Can somebody provide an update to this thread? Based on your experience, what is the most reliable wireless router so far? My current wireless router keeps dropping connection. Am thinking to replace it. Thank you in advance for your feedback!
I'm not a fan of wireless. If you want to know the most reliable, it's wired. Im sure someone will come along who uses wireless...
