Windows Corrupt file message question

Discussion in 'Networking and Security' started by taclander, Dec 19, 2012.

  1. For the first time in 15+ years of computer ownership, I caved and brought the computer in to a local place. Angies list has a good rating on them, and I am at a loss. I can't tell you how pissed I am. I didn't look closely when I opened the case, but when opened in the shop the lady showed me 3 popped capacitors on the MB. I guess maybe it was at its end. I am getting the drive copied to the SATA drive I had internally, and should be able to recover crap I thought I had backed up via Acronis, that so far I still am unable to recover.
The highlight, I get to buy, or build a new computer. :D I am inclined to buy since it will be a family use computer. My 2 trading computers I built, but buying a whole is cheaper for the basics.
Regrardless I am ticked I couldn't solve it.
Than k you all for your help. This to me is the beauty of the internet. Guys, or gals, like yourselves who can help out.
Peace. Let me know where I can send a beer, or wine if you prefer.
Pm me, you people are a value.

  2. I have.

O.p. should run chkdsk first, and then with /r.

If the drive is 10 years old too , its probably toast

i was thinking about capacitors, cause this happens to me once. random restarts,PC hangs etc..turns out-it was capacitors

depends on many factors. out of probably 30+ various HD's for last 20 years i remember only one or two that failed.heat is a major cause. makes sense to check the temps of them, while PC is on heavy load. and keep the room fairly cool. if you have 85F in the room-then it's probably 100F in the case

on bright side-it's not your son's fault :)

  4. Whenever I got that error it was, as I recall been a few years, just needs a fresh install of Windows XP. I tried what you did and it was a band aid that when looking at the time just made since to reformat.

  6. Picked up the backed up data and fried computer. $57 to have to corrupt drive recovered to the other drive I had in the machine. Popped it into another machine and everything is there. I'll have to go through moving old email from OE to Live just to make sure I'm not missing info I need, but otherwise all seems to be good, other than new computer time.
