  2. If I pull the drive and put it in a new machine, not as a main drive, would I be able to pull files off of it? It is the main drive in the Dell, ie the Windows XP drive. I have another internal drive that I backed up pictures on which I will pull. If I can just pull the main HD and stilll access the other files I'll do it now. I didn't think I could access the files though without access to Windows first.
The only other files I might really need would be the damn Outlook Express ones. They are backed up, but at this point I can't access them through Acronis.

if you absolutely sure that you don't have any virus on this old Pc-then yes,you can install it as second hard drive(assuming that on new PC windows is already installed)

doesn't matter,if you have windows on both drives. PC is set to boot up from HD you bought it with.
you can find info on internet about how to get your files from outlook

  4. You bring up my main worry as to whether this failure is a failure, or one of my sons who was on the computer last and shut it down last night. When I see boot issue I worry he got into something. Other than yelling at him, it is to late now.

Actually I was in getting after him regularly about wasting time on YouTube, and am pretty sure he isn't the problem.
