  2. Hello mgookin,

I will tell you from first hand experience, all of my systems have been converted to Windows 7. I am not just saying it to say because I am affiliated with Microsoft. I can truly stand behind this product and tell you straight away it works very reliably, fast and extremely stable. The 64bit version is a real powerhouse as well.

Anyways, what to say about Windows 7?

    Let's check out the features!
    NEW FEATURES:
There are several new features that are available with Windows 7 that will assist you with deployment and management of a large number of workstations. Enterprise IT infrastructures are increasingly complex to manage. The Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack (MDOP) is a dynamic desktop solution that is available as a subscription for Software Assurance customers. The solution suite enhances application deployment and compatibility, increases IT responsiveness and end user uptime, and helps reduce total cost of ownership (TCO) of your desktop software and IT management. To learn more about this package, please go here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/enterprise/products/mdop/default.aspx
Also now available is MDT 2010 (Microsoft Deployment Tool) which will help you create images and automate the OS and application installations, data migration, and desktop configuration process. To learn more, please go here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd744519(WS.10).aspx
Microsoft does have an official Windows 7 Support Forum specifically for IT Pros located here http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/category/w7itpro/ . It is supported by product specialists as well as engineers and support teams. You may want to also check the threads available there for additional assistance and feedback.
Also, if you would like to read what other users have said about their positive experience with Windows 7, you may want to check out the following sites: http://www.winsupersite.com/ and http://www.edbott.com/weblog/

  6. John: Since you're with Microsoft, my guess is you'll listen and relay info. I'm an engineer (not computers though) who owns many systems, builds systems, builds and maintains networks, etc. I have taken it very personally over the years that so much "crap" is running on MY systems. I really wish Microsoft would consider the builder/ owner/ operator of a dedicated system in an OS release. Every time I install an OS I have to FIGHT the OS to get rid of grandma's photo toys, kids chat clients, adobe trash, etc... and it goes on and on. What I'm looking for is an install where I can, at time of OS install, pick what functions I want as is done in MS Server 2008 where by default no roles are assigned. Fewer roles = greater performance AND LESS RISK not to mention happier clients who would speak better of you.
Thanks for visiting our forum. Stick around please.

  8. I'm using W7 64 bit since a few month without issues. No compatibility problems with win32 applications too. If you need the extra ram its not bad.

Whats annoying is the windows explorer. If you work with a lot of files and folders often, its a huge step backwards from usability perspective. I could write a book about why it sucks compared to the XP one. Had to get a replacement for that.

The new taskbar is an improvement overall. However, I'm missing the most obvious configuration setting (small icons - never group). It groups all java-windows together, which is a pain in the arse.

Other than that, i have no gripe with win7. There are quite a few useful UI improvements i don't want to miss anymore, i.e. moving windows around across monitors with WIN-curser left/right, the startmenu (although nothing beats Launchy still).

i recently bought a new laptop on win7, on msn the video cam has a tendency to freeze up, this never happen on my old xp, i have consulted with an array of IT experts and no one could figure it, so new doesn't mean its better

  10. I had the same frustrations with explorer and file access. The way to make it work is to use the Libraries feature. Understand that the Libraries feature does not create folders but simply provides links to existing folders. Once I understood that I "submitted" to the Libraries function. Since it's seemingly unlimited in expansion, it actually can work better.

You can ungroup the taskbar items. I ungrouped mine but don't remember how I did it. It's easy to google "Win7 xxxx" where "xxxx" is the function or process you want to accomplish. The web is full of very useful tweeks.
