Air raid sirens, evacuation advised as Centre orders drills on May 7

Amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan over last month's Pahalgam terror attack, the Union Home Ministry has asked several states to conduct drills for effective civil defence on May 7 (Wednesday).

During the drills, air raid warning sirens will be activated, and civilians and students will be trained in civil defence to protect themselves in the event of a hostile attack.

There would be provisions for crash blackout measures and early camouflaging of vital plants and installations.
The states have been asked to update their evacuation plan and its rehearsal. At least 244 civil districts are participating in this mock drill.

The Centre has also convened a meeting on Tuesday, chaired by the Union Home Secretary, to review the preparedness for a nationwide mock drill. Chief Secretaries of most states and Union Territories are expected to attend the meeting via video conferencing.
Officials from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the Railway Board, and representatives from Air Defence will also participate in the meeting.

The security drill advisory to states came amid repeated cross-border firings by Pakistan at Indian posts. For the past 11 consecutive nights, the Pakistan Army has resorted to unprovoked firing along the Line of Control (LoC), which has been strongly responded to by the Indian Army.

It came after Pakistan-backed terrorists opened fire on tourists in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam, killing 26 people, including a Nepali national. It was the worst attack in the Kashmir Valley since the assault on CRPF personnel in Pulwama in 2019.

Pakistan, fearing Indian retaliation, has ramped up its defence preparedness, strengthened its border outposts and has been conducting missile tests in anticipation of a military strike by New Delhi. Some ministers have claimed that India may strike Pakistan soon, adding that the military would strongly respond to what they say "Indian misadventure".

India has taken sweeping diplomatic measures as part of its response to the Pahalgam massacre, including the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, the shutting of its airspace to Pakistani airlines, among others. Islamabad has responded to tit-for-tat measures and paused the Simla Agreement.

Indeed and nothing new about that. My father was briefly doing an engineering project there in the early 1980s and even as a kid visiting, it was beyond obvious that homeless kids and those in Islamic semenaries were completely immersed in abuse from systemic narcissism. Church abuses had been exposed for a while back home.

A Pakistani psychologist once told me
"Our society trains men to believe they’re kings. When you’re raised to think the universe serves you, rape isn’t a crime, it’s your birthright."

Western societies, with their emphasis on individualism, may produce more overt narcissists (all pedophiles are strongly narcissistic) the charismatic, grandiose Trumpy kind, but more rigid societies may incubate even more but a form of narcissism wrapped in piety, tradition, or "moral authority."

There are some NGOs producing reports now but Pakistan will be among the last places on Earth to improve. I bet the clerics and muftis are blaming the Internet for exposing them, claiming all this abuse is a new thing from social media corrupting the youth.

Understanding this psychological background explains a lot of human behavior. Thank you for sharing this perspective. These points seem to throw light on behavior of some members even on ET. This also explains why women are less represented on ET. (Although everybody is hiding behind an id and we do not get to see them, this seems to be the case.) Anyways, you opened a new paradigm in my looking at some things around me.

Now in a live shooting war...

India Strikes Pakistan Two Weeks After Terrorist Attack in Kashmir
The Indian government said its forces had struck nine sites in Pakistan and on Pakistan’s side of the disputed Kashmir region. Pakistani military officials said that five places had been hit, in Punjab Province and its part of Kashmir, and that the strikes “will not go unanswered.”

But after the war started Indian indices are up. They were down yesterday possibly on 'rumors'. But everything is in sync with global markets. So far nothing much serious as far as the market is concerned.
