I day trade the VIX options for intraday entry/exit. For example, if I want to short I wait until we have an uptick to buy the puts cheap and vice versa for calls. On the other hand, when I trade options on index futures I usually swing trade, and the options I buy are usually 2 months out. My best advice would be to nibble, then buy more to add to your overall swing position once the trend is confirmed mostlikely correct by MACD or BOLLINGER (e.g. don't commit all capital at once.)
