Well, we can agree that neither party has much of a plan to resolve the problem. I'll concede, for the moment, that on the big picture national level the left isn't impressing anyone with their immigration policies, but at the local level I still say they're the ones winning all those battles. They're winning because republicans just can't bring themselves to sacrifice all that slave labor, so the game continues.
Cap'n, we're at full employment now. And while half of Americans say their job is crap and they're underpaid, most of those jobs are probably pretty cushy compared to, to use one low-skill sector as an example, harvesting. So what would food prices look like if we paid Americans an attractive enough wage to quit and jump to harvesting?
They can have the harvesting. Small and medium manufacturing and construction have large numbers of illegals. This impacts wages, benefits, general working conditions and safety for everyone employed in this type of work, especially minorities and low skilled whites. These numbers are not insignificant. I've written it here before, I can take you to one job shop after another in the Chicago area where the only English speaking person is the manager.
If you take me with you and I am wearing my ICE hat, I bet that the ratio of spanish speakers to english speakers will change dramatically within ten seconds.
