Everyone from clergy men to politicians to the cops themselves use those services from time to time and will continue to do so. The entire porn industry is a form of prostitution and its product is extremely widespread and accepted in the United States. It will probably remain illegal in most of the United States, simply because no serious politican wants to take the political criticism from pushing to make it legal...and it is now so widespread and available that those who seek prostitutes can easily find them. Also the fact that it is illegal probably deters at least a few women who might have considered doing it to decide against it. The public would probably want to avoid a situation where the girl next door gets behind on her bills, or wants to buy a new car and decides to do some temporary work as a prostitute so she can make $30k then go back to a more normal life. The fact that it is illegal means that the women who enter that life are probably much more committed to it and not just part-timers looking for a quick buck. Since not every Lisa, Laura and Susan are doing it...the prostitutes themselves probably make more than they would with millions more girls "giving it a try". Under the current system almost everyone is a winner. The prostitues get paid more, the politicians & preachers can claim to champion faily values...while still having access to the girls, parents of young women feel better that it is not being dangled before their daughters as a career choice and virtually anyone who wants to use one pretty much has access.
No, its not 100% consensual. No woman starts off in prostitution clearly thinking. Most are using drugs, or drinking heavily or pushed into it by someone close the FIRST time they do it. No woman in her right mind wants to be a prostitute. After they have done it for sometime, they are numb to it so they just keep doing it for the money. These women are taken advantage of, which is why its illegal. Drug use is also not consensual. Anyone who ever did drugs did not just go out one day and say "hey, I think im going to use heroin today for the first time." Most were pressured by friends to just "try it" Something they never would have done if not pressured. Gambling takes advantage of people who are not smart enough to understand they are going to lose. In other situations, taking advantage of someone, even if its consentual is illegal when someone is not in their right mind, or not smart enough to understand the contracts they get themselves into. Making prostitution and drug use legal, opens the doors to many more people getting taken advantage of and put into situation they would not hope for in their lives.
