why is prostitution illegal in the United States?

  1. That is ridiculous logic. Here let me show you exactly how ridiculous it is by providing a similar example....

Almost everyone in the world has stolen something at least once in their life (even if the item was of little value) 99% of the world will agree to this. Therefore, if everyone steals, why should governments make it illegal to steal?

Now...if governments made it legal to steal (meaning no consequences) how much theft would we have in the world? if you are a theif, its a really good deal for you, but if you are someone who works for his money, its not so good.

Same with prostitution...if you are a unmarried sex addicted male with no daughters, then prostitution looks like a good idea for you to have it legal. If you are married and/or have daughters, then you really dont want them to have that career choice on the table.

The argument is perfectly logical. You don't understand it.

The debate here centers on deviant social behavior between two (or more) consenting adults.

Theft is not analogous to prostitution because theft is a non consensual act. One party deprives another of property through force or fraud.

The sex trade, drug use and gambling is 100% consensual.

The Government's role is to protect and preserve individual liberty. Not to legislate Christian morality. And I'm a Christian.

You need to come down to earth and get real. All these social ills are commonplace, despite their illegality. Always have been. Always will be. The law does nothing but empower a huge nanny state and placate zealots into thinking they're 'righteous' by supporting it.

I think that's a pretty good argument. The only thing I would add is that there should be consideration as to how old both the consenting parties are. They should both be old enough/mature enough to make informed decisions for themselves. I think 21+ is about right.

  4. Oops, try it again, Sherlock!

First, rapes are not tied to internet usage. They are just numbers of rapes.

Second, you have to look at the per capita rapes. The "backward African country" of South Africa is #1 in per capita rapes, meaning there is 1.2 rapes per 1000 persons.
    Seychelles is #2.
    Zimbabwe is #7.
All 3 of the above are countries in Africa.
    The US is #9.

    So this statement is incorrect:
Believe me, you'd rather have your daughter walking the streets of the US than South Africa. [IMG]

  5. Thanks for doing some research.
The problem with your article is that it represents only Nashville, TN in 2009 and 2007 only.
You have to look at the big picture. My recent post above gives the big picture and supports my notion that increased internet usage does not support increased rapes. [IMG]

Yeah, Peil, I respect your opinion and I don't mind that we disagree on a lot of stuff, but my beef with you is that it seems like time after time you make statements meant to sound like facts that are based on 'something you heard' or 'something you read' somewhere. Don't believe everything you hear or read, especially if it has political or religious motivations behind it.

  9. Oh sorry...US is #9 per capita....that makes a whole world of difference knowing we are a whole 2 spots away from being like zimbabwe.

Now..ask yourself, why is this country so high in the number of rapes when we are supposed to be more civilized than other countries? What could possible be the cause? Rapes come from people that desperately want sex. People that desperately want sex, want it because they are thinking about it all the time. They think about it all the time because why? They are looking at porn all day.

  10. To be fair the incidence of rape pre-internet in the US was still comparitively high.
