It was IBM's business requirement to have a second source for its Personal Computer cpu. So, Intel appointed AMD as the second source supplier. It was an acrimonious relationship Intel and AMD after the X86 architecture boom. During its turnaround, AMD sold all its fab foundry and revamped its CPU design. Nvidia is also fabless setup.
