I always heard that regular gas goes through so much more refining then diesal does so why is it more expensive?
Supply and demand. Europe has very high diesel use and USA ships diesel to Europe and in turn Europe ships excess gasoline to USA. Price gap is widest during the winter because diesel and home heating oil are the same distillate. During the summer months diesel used to be cheaper than gasoline.
