I think the government has a scope to make it affordable by reducing the taxes on gasoline and diesel which are very high. Also, as you pointed out there's an election coming so the government will definitely take measures to cushion the impact of all that is happening these days.
I agree. What you suggest is happening! Of course, there are both Federal and State gas taxes. This is how we pay for our highways and create incentives for conservation, more fuel efficient vehicles and development of alternate energy sources. It's a form of user tax -- those who use the most gasoline pay the most tax... Federal was about 18 cents/gal I believe. California has the highest State gas tax at ~85 cents/gal, which explains their highest in the nation gas prices. These taxes are either in the process of being rolled back, or will be -- temporarily -- to address the current oil shortage brought on by sanctions on Russia. Also we can expect additional releases from the strategic reserve. On an unrelated note, you can understand why I would react as I did to "Scataphagos's" absurd remark which I'll repeat for the record here: "Gasoline is high because Biden and his administration WANT IT THAT WAY... they WANT the price of gasoline to HURT most Americans..." [posted by Scataphagos] What does this indicate about the mental faculties of a person posting something like that about any American President and politician? Obviously, he's absolutely nuts!!!
