  2. A little vegan "wisdom":

How to Avoid the Most Dangerous Side Effect of Veganism !

    According to Dr. Cousen’s Blog:

“Consistent research over the last decade has shown that vegans and live food people of all ages and sexes have a much higher risk of becoming B-12 deficient ... This deficiency is particularly true with newborn babies ... The good news that one major study ... showed, in studying 37 vegan children was that there was normal growth and development in children who were breastfed for 6 months at a minimum, when there was B-12 supplementation ... It is my medical opinion, as a vegan since 1973 and live fooder since 1983, and as a person committed to supporting all those who choose to become healthy live food vegans, that it would be wise to incorporate some B-12 supplementation in your diet.”

My concern is why the need for artificial supplementation of the vegan diet, the same diet touted by a few zealots as the "perfect" way to eat and get your nutrients?

What is "whole foods only" about a B12 vitamin?

Bacteria in soil and water manufacture B12. Our own bodies also manufacture B12 and it's stored for a long time because we only need a tiny amount of it. This is why even a pure vegan who washes his/her vegetables thoroughly wouldn't need supplementation for several years

Animals get B12 by eating soil containing the bacteria that produce B12, so if you eat the dirt on your organic veggies, you don't need B12 supplementation.

Also most cereals are fortified with B12 as well, so the majority of pure vegetarians who either buy dirt-sterile conventional produce or who wash their produce before eating it, are getting the B12 they need.

A better question would be why do Atkins, Mercola, Weil, etc. promote so many supplements for those following their recommended ways of eating? If meat and dairy products in the diet are the best source for for well-rounded nutrition and they're all promoting fresh produce as well, then why is any supplementation at all needed?

  6. All these diets are nonsense. They all say you can lose weight the easy way and quickly! I've been fit all my life and I can tell you that a lot of these commercial diets are nonsense.

Here is the oh-so-elusive secret of how to eat healthy:
    *plenty of vegetables
    *plenty of fiber
    *not too much protein
*Carbs must be eaten in direct proportion to how active you plan on being that day.

    Here is one more dynamic:
    *Food has calories.
    *Being active burns calories.
    1 + 1 = 2
IF YOU'RE NOT GOING TO BE VERY ACTIVE ON A GIVEN DAY, DON'T EAT AS MUCH!

    Can't argue with that

Missing only one thing: The body thrives on actual food. Avoid non-nutritive food-like substances :p

  8. Is there an echo in here? Those are my lines.

Those packaged processed "non-nutritive food-like substances" is your source of B12. eg. soymilk, veggie burgers, whole grain breads, crackers, cereals etc. No B12 in a vegan salad.

A vegan diet devoid of any supplementation from fortified food or pill will quickly lead to deficiency and ill health.:(

ps Still awaiting your evidence that consumption of adequate amount of lean meat leads to ill-health and early death. A little meat, fish or dairy obviates the need for supplementation or fortified PROCESSED "food-like substances" such as those YOU must eat

  9. Different topic here.

It is often argued that the growth in the prehistoric human brain was the result of the protein gain by the starting of the consumption of animals(very simplified). I guess my question is, is this true? If we were to look to our prehistoric past, would not the discovery of fire also started this ability to grown brain power? Meaning the ability to cook food now allows the body to absorb more calories then eating raw food alone. Its something like on average for every 1lb of raw vegetables only 50 cals are actually absorbed, but cooking the vegetables seriously amplifies this and allows to eat beans and other previously undigested foods, including parts of an animal. If we were like a gorilla then we would no longer have to spend 90% of our time eating raw food.

I am not a vegetarian but I often hear the carnivore argument that the reason we got out of the monkey stage was we started eating other animals. But I think it might be more of a chicken and egg scenario.
