Why does Trump thinks starting a war with Iran will help a president win vote?

Over the past several months Iran and their proxies have pushed forward with their nuclear program, attacked oilfields & tankers, shot down drones, and killed an American contractor. They've been pushing towards a breaking point for awhile. If Trump wanted a war, he wouldn't have called off the airstrike after they shot down our drone. An airstrike that would've killed an estimated 150 Iranians wouldn't escalated tensions a lot more than this. I truly believe that he wants to avoid war. His best bet at reelection is a strong economy, and a war has the potential to upset that.

There are no right decisions whenever it comes to things like this. You can't blame the POTUS for making a call like this if the Pentagon truly has reliable knowledge of an imminent attack. I would feel the same way regardless of who is in the white house.

Far as I recall, only congress can declare war. Like how back in Aug 2019 Trump had no legal standing when he "ordered all companies to stop doing business with China." Have I missed a memo on what constitutes war now?

Sure you can blame POTUS. You don't think this fallout is a result of scrapping the Iran deal, and a "maximum pressure" campaign crippling the Iranian economy?

Also, why the selective outrage about dead contractors who knowingly go into a conflict zone but we get to stay buddies with this guy cuz Trump says so?

The Iran nuclear deal was temporary in nature. It was going to have to be renegotiated because it allows Iran to ramp up their nuclear program after 10 years. Trump told them they would have to renegotiate the deal to make it permanent or we would withdraw and reapply sanctions. They made their choice. The agreement is still in place with several other countries despite the fact that they've violated it multiple times.

The agreement is meaningless if others reneg, and worse lobby or sanction participating economies from engaging with Iran on trade.

The US reneged on the trade deal with Iran then tore it up. Trump is destructive in nature; the fact that bloodshed and military conflict results is not a surprise. Nor is it a surprise that the US in involved again.

The JPCOA hasn't been torn up. It's still in effect with China, France, Russia, UK, & Germany. Iran has violated it multiple times, and there are various reports that they've violated it from day one.

The deal was a temporary solution intended to slow their nuclear program. It was never meant to be a permanent. It was going to have to be renegotiated because we were never going to allow them to ramp up their nuclear program after 10 years. Iran refused to renegotiate, so we withdrew and reapplied sanctions.

I'm not sure what the answer is to this problem, but we were going to have to deal with it sooner rather than later regardless of who occupies the white house. Hopefully we'll find a way to avoid going to war.

We've established that the national guard of a sovereign country is not the same as ISIL fighters we're in conflict with. Try to keep up.

If the command of military green-lighting proxy conflict is fair game, then we should expect our enemies to come after our command, and we'd have higher priorities in Saudi and Russia if that's the new game plan.

The link to the US embassy has not been established (no matter how the Pentagon tries to spin it), and it was a casualty-less retaliation to our bombing of 75 casualties for our one mercenary.
