Why does the Euro show up on pre-Euro historical data?

    Hello all,

In studying charts that go back way when, I noticed that some of the Euro pairs have data that goes back into the 70's. Since the Euro wasn't in existence until 1995, how is it that these charts go back so far? I gather maybe it replaced another currency pair, i.e. the German mark? Anyone have any ideas?

    Thanks...

  2. You can synthetically generate those prices using historical Deutsche Mark, French Franc, Italian Lira etc. quotes, applying the respective weights that were used in the EUR creation.

  4. The Euro was in existence since (I believe) 1974 but it was an accounting currency for the founding members of EU.
