In our area, I know of three companies that have moved away. One went to Utah and the other two moved to Colorado. California unemployment is the second-worst in the country (U3 unemployment is over 11% and U6 unemployment is near 20%). I've lived in the same California city for the last 20 years and unemployment rate in this area used to hover around 3%. Now it's around 9%, which is better than most of the state, but still terrible compared to recent history. Nobody sees a fast recovery for California and many are concerned about a double-dip recession because the real estate/construction industry was so badly damaged and the real estate market is still very soft. Also, California is deep in debt and there are hundreds of billions in unfunded retirement liabilities for the public employee unions. There's a lot of uncertainty here, to say the least. Businesses don't like uncertainty.
everybody leaves and goes as far away from it as they can get. When they finally run out of real estate they either end up in Florida or California (or now Alaska.) All of California is just the black sheep of every East Coast family. That's why it's so weird. The brother who did it right is running the family business in Boston. The crazy one is living "somewhere out in California with his girlfriend."
California is to the USA what Greece is to Europe. The fun will start when it comes to bailout time. Only difference is, California actually has a very large economy. Last I checked it was like 8th in the world (don't quote me on that, better do some fact checking.) Just piss poorly managed. My definition of lucky is a Vietnam Vet who didn't get killed and got a job as a bus driver in California.
get up there to the gay bay and they have some kind of bacteria that just loves the weather like the humidity from the sea, and it infects every kind of bread you can think of, from the sourdough all the way to any pizza crust. never had a Dominoes Pizza in Ca (why would you) but I bet it is the best dominoes pizza in the country.
California has a large economy (GDP) because we have a large population (>33M), but the "GDP per capita" is somewhere around 10th in the country and sliding downward. I heard we got passed by Minnesota last year.
SF Bay area is the # 1 destination in US for recent college graduates i.e. brain power... California not only has Silicon Valley but also Hollywood, Agriculture, Tourism and a huge coast line i.e. fishing, ports, military etc...
The only major drawback of California is its stupid government elected by an overabundance of non logical people. If you have a requirement (constitutional) for a balanced budget quit trying to work around it and live within your means. Sooner or later it will bite you where it hurts.
yeah that sounds right. I was just basing it on what some congressman said. He said, "Eighth in the world" (or at least that's the way I heard it, not so sure about my memory anymore) but he probably meant 8th in the country. so that's not really any big deal at anyrate, what's going to happen at bailout time?
