Why do people post their trading results here

Discussion in 'Psychology' started by fearless9, Nov 19, 2008.

  1. I strongly disagree and there's a few well known cases of how someone can use info obtained online to steal, ruin someone's financial life or commit other crimes such as murder.

The point is this...if your going to post info about yourself online...

Be careful and don't post other info by mistake with the info your sharing online in an annonymous online community.

The other point I made (not to you) was that it's pure ego to post broket profit/loss statements when an explanation isn't provided...

Thus, being inspired doesn't correlate with being empowered because you don't know how it was done.

  3. I agree that not disclosing your thought process behind trading results is meaningless to readers. In fact Mark I'm so philosophical about "results" that I'd argue the money is the LEAST important consideration. Five of us can have the same market idea and our results will vary by wide margins. One guy will have too tight a stop and get bopped out, one will take too quick a profit, one will step on the gas and double up on his profit etc. I'm WAY MORE interested in the reasoning than the $$$ or ($$$).

  4. Now we are getting somewhere Señor.

The P&L is merely the outcome of the process and any Trader who knows trading to the point of consistent profitability is well aware of this.

And so what prompts them to post a P&L which holds little value, when a detailed explanation would be far more beneficial to the Reader.

I heard of a few people who got invited to manage OPM.

(invitation only... don't know what actually transpired.)

Larry Williams provided the best explanation:

I would probably trade the markets without wanting profits if it "proved" my worth to the world, to an old girlfriend, to my parents, my brother, or even someone I cannot identify or dredge from the recesses of my mind. Saying I am ego-driven may be correct, but it is not about bragging, it is about showing them I can overcome.

It is about letting the world know I found a way out.

There is absolutely no privacy. Don't ever think there is. Eventually all will be public.

Every post, personal ad, blog you have participated will exist for eternity. Your grandchildren will be able to view your whole Internet life.

Somebody someday will collect all your data using IP's and credit cards and place it in a file of genealogy for easy viewing.

In 200 years anthropologists will write books about our times based on the blogs and postings left behind.

I have been keeping a daily journal here on ET for a month or so. I post my daily thoughts, goals and results. I started the journal to help ME stay focused. It is not an ego thing, I haven't discussed the trade, setup, entry, etc.,. and although there has been little to no discussion with other ETers regarding my journal, I still feel like I am communicating with someone other than myself. It keeps it more interesting for me, as I've tried to keep a notebook journal and get bored with it. Others on Et have inspired me and if I can in turn inspire someone else then great. I am not concerned about revealing private information.

    Very true.

Google is probably holding your porn search history.

Amazon.com knows which company has more intellectuals than comics readers.

Your entire social network is on Facebook.

You might be building a profile you do not want to be associated with...

There is little place to hide on the internet...
You are not as shielded as you thought.

  10. Excellent Point ElCubano ...
... and your writings are brilliant as always, fearless9.

One of the main reasons that people post their PnL's is to establish the legitimacy of their trading claims, statements, theory(ies) and methodologies.

As well as the information can/does help those who are constantly striving to improve themselves at one of the hardest games to master in town.

At least I am sure that is why others have posted their info before me, and that is why I have posted mine (and will continue to do so) in the future.

It's just good to know "who's who" ...

    Good trading
