Earnings often aren't the entire story. There are numerous categories of stocks that trade on cash flow instead of earnings, eg oil and gas exploration and production companies, REITs, companies that are depreciating large amounts of goodwill from acquisitions and startups. Many investors consider free cash flow a superior way to value stocks, considering all the games that can be played with reported earnings.
