Why do futures gyrate so wildly overnight? Baffling

    As if your Sleepy Joe nonsense is useful.

    If OP wants to know the cause, then
    he needs to do some research.

    That is all.

    Algorithmic manipulation, which is an extension of what is going on in the day, just more obvious.

    DOW is the world's worst as far as %% gainer[ Edit delayed /SDOW + UDOW =>>];
    DIA versus SPY\dow loses mostly anyway /LOL.
    Premarket about as bad== which your question concerns;
    most likely the same reason as why i buy SPY, SPXS/SPXU/sso\ Qld [tqqq not today] or SH.
    REALLY buy + sell reasons vary depending on seasons. Looks like a SPY, sso/QLD buy today +or SH, SH .
    Most likely a turn around tuesday for the whole week up/ Stock Traders Almanac figures.
    But maybe the reason why SH buy volume is ok /cant predict.
    I remember once this year could not get good fill on SH, so SPXS or SPXU helps/:D:D

    Big difference. My words were said as a joke. Your words had a serious intent. I stand on it that research from an obscure source cannot be proven to show causation.

    ps snarkiness is not good for trading well.

    Ken, there were no wild gyrations in the period you refer to. Your question reflects an unconscious incompetence. You should learn more about the overnight period before arriving at false conclusions.

    Also you are thinking about a derivatives market that trades 23/5 through the lens of your intraday momentum trading of stocks. It’s the well-known problem of seeing everything as a nail because you’re only used to hammering things. Your experience may be a hindrance to learning.

    I’m sure you know that markets are interrelated and there are other markets being traded while the US cash market is closed. The overnight session in US stock index futures is the tail on the dog, so to speak.

    The overnight session is eminently tradeable and there are periods of wild gyrations from time to time. But there will be no mystery as to the cause of the wildness. Think Fukushima, for example.
