Everyone else trades alongside in a frantic rush to not miss out. Not much other volume. This will result in bids taken out on the way down and offers taken out on the way up, evidenced by trades on the bid and offer, respectively. Exactly that pattern that you are describing. So, which part appears to you as incomprehensible?
