  1. this is speculation. Without serious experience, there is a huge number of qualified financial service workers with solid experience

The rules of 2 years ago no longer apply.

For the financial sector its not a recession, it's a depression.

You will have to be creative.

Do this. Find a job you are willing to do, and one that you can do. Then beg to be given a chance to work for nothing. That's right, insist that you want to work for nothing just because you're so excited about doing whatever that you want to work for nothing just to get experience. Then work twice as hard as every one else. Arrive early, leave late, and take a 20 minute lunch breaks. Be super polite and efficient. Work like mad all day long.

You'll get hired, with pay, in less than a month.

  3. There was a news article about people offering to do this, work for free, but it didn't work out for them. Something about the laws against companies hiring workers without pay.

Probably the best chance for this to work is with a small private firm. One where the immediate boss makes the rules.

  5. Agreed. There is a lot of flaky ideas bouncing around on blogs. There is also minimum wage laws, liability and whole lot of other things

"Oooh, I developed carpal tunnel syndrome while working free."

"Oooh, I am not your employee, but I need the userID/pw, so I can run around on your networks..."

Only if your not in the proper Sector of the Financial World. There are plenty people making money in the Financial Sector. Of course, you can't be in the arena of dealing with School Teachers and the rest of the 9 to 5ers.

You have to be dealing with High Net Worth individuals, ones that do not see Depressions, recessions etc. Of course they will cry poor but that is just a smoke screen. Those who have built up their wealth over the last 40 plus years are spending and investing.

Robb Report,. most recent Issue I have, talks about the Spending on all kinds of Fun stuff, from Hawker Jets to 20k watches, as the bonus world gears up for end of year......SHOW ME THE MONEY time.

The treasure coast is still selling yahts in great numbers, homes are being picked up, at discounts or course. Plenty of People putting cash to work.

Basic fact, the majority of the people in the Financial World do not make money and they are in sectors that are controlled by contraction and expansion of the economy.

ENERGY VENTURES, REITS, COMMERICAL RE, GOLD, (OVER ALL HARD ASSETS), are in play now, but all ways have been.

Its not so much the product or joint venture you put together, bu the clients you go after that will keep you from feeling the "Business Cycle".

The grand old, played out verbage, "Money Never Sleeps" is true. The wealthy have to do something with their money, someone is getting to play with it.

Its very simple now, the sheep in the standard Financial Job discription are finished for a while. The weak firms, the banks do who hired far to much, the traders that can't trade this market, etc....are all falling to the way side....however, PLENTY OF PEOPLE ARE MAKING MONEY.

Just do your research and find a Private Firm that deals with High Net Worth Individuals...and don't believe that everyone is feeling what Main Street or the Trendy CNBC WallStreet is feeling during this Recession, depression or whatever you call it.

  7. The OP never said he wanted topshelf work. And you got your runner job because you most definitely knew someone to get in. Consider yourself lucky and let's not criticize people who are already in agony.

Engineers haven't been finding jobs for most of this decade, especially on the Electrical/Computer, and of course, anything to do with manufacturing.

    Teaching is pretty awful.

    Accounting is getting very glutted.

  9. The job market is terrible I know. It's bad everywhere except where bailout money is going.

I'm BSEE and math. I've sent out tons of resumes, heard from three companies in 2-3 months, and got one offer(so far), which I plan on taking. Pay is very solid starting however, the ability to negotiate wages is almost gone which worries me about the future. Thinking about MBA and going into management or picking up MSEE and going into teaching.

The job market sucks and it's nobody's fault except government, wall street, and businessmen who sent jobs overseas for the company's "bottom line", which seems to be bankruptcy for quite a few.

  10. I am still around, I can't believe this thread still is! Thanks again for all the replies, sad news though, I honestly gave up.

I am so sick of job searching, I really just can't take it anymore. I've tried everything and can't afford to invest anymore money or time in additional training/licensing.

I am just going to settle for a blue collar lifestyle.

My disappointment will slowly fade until I don't remember and don't care anymore. I'm not trying to be dramatic but this is my only option left.
