who thought of long?

Obviously I know what long/short stands for but how did it come into usage? Anybody know?

 

Some speculate that the terms long and short come from the times when accounts were measured by chips on an exchequer (the length of the line of chips would be longer if the kingdom had bought more assets, and shorter if it had sold).

But no one can really confirm that hypothesis.
