Someone should ask Sarah Palin, who she has picked as her Vice President - because it is likely that she will be needing one!
Obama keeps being proven right in foreign policy matters 1.The Iraq war in which 90 % of Americans think it was a mistake 2.A time table to exit Iraq, which the Iraqi government and even Bush now agrees with 3.Trying diplomacy before war with other countries like Iran, which Bush is now doing Obama took stances on all these issues when it was very unpopular to do so --------- 1. I disagree that it was a mistake to go into Iraq. Really there will be no way of knowing how successful that move was for decades, but I'm pretty sure that opinion polls aren't alway the best way to determine what is right. We have that war just about won now, which wouldn't have happend if Obama had his way about the surge. 2. We are able to have a timetable for withdrawl due to the surge, which worked and Obama was against and McCain was for, when it was VERY UNPOPULAR to do so. 3. I think you're very naive in understanding countries like Iran. The only reason they will negotiate is to buy more time, in order to close the gap on nukes. Iran, North Korea, love to talk it up with the Europeans and the UN, as they lie, cheat and steal the entire time. Force and the threat of force is the only thing that will force a country like Iran to do anything other than what they want to do. By the way, most likely, Isreal is the country that will be dealing with Iran anyway. But it does put Iran in check to know that we have lots of bombers just a a couple minutes away in Iraq.
clacy, public opinion or polls on the Iraq war ... how about world opinion? Does it matter? Is the Bush administration smarter than the rest of the world all together, is that what you are implying?
Spydey, take a second. Are you really suggesting that the dealings that the Governor of Alaska has with the premier of the N.W.T or the Yukon in Canada represents 'experience in foreign affairs' in the sense that it is required for someone in the White House?? No disrespect, brother, but you need to take a step back and consider that suggestion for a moment.
I don't know if that is entirely true. Certainly the timing and shock value are there, but I think the bigger issue is that conservatives on the whole have been very distrustful of him on some issues. I think that may have been as big a factor as the historical implications and shock value of putting a woman on the ticket. It seems to me her credentials are quite conservative.
If you think invading Iraq was a good idea just to throw out a dictator then you must also believe that the US should go to war with every country that has a evil dictator to throw them out Bush knew the American people would have never accepted such an idea which is why he based invading Iraq on Weapons of mass destruction.
This is one dumb broad. I just watched her on CNBC and couldn't take more than a couple of minutes. She wouldn't let Maria get a word in edgewise. The words 'calm' and 'composed' obviously don't belong in her lexicon.
As a trader if you know 80% of the people positioned are bearish what should you probably do? Opinions are like assholes. I didn't hear many Europeans complaining when FDR fought an unprovoked war against Germany which cost America 500,000 lives. All so that Russia could enslave the East for the next half century. Who shapes public global opinion? The media. If a non-socialist American President said the sun sets in the west he'd get an argument. Ever wonder why Blair didn't get the same heat as Bush? Or the Democrats who not only voted for the war but lobbied for it? I'm not defending the war-I'm an isolationist-but know what? The only two true anti-interventionist candidates in the primaries were Kucinich and Ron Paul. You saw the response the media and voters gave them, eh? Obama's anti-Iraq stance was the SAFE bet in Chicago. I ran for Congress in Chicago the same year he was elected to the Senate and support for Bush or war was death. Obama is the consummate sentiment jockey. The words maverick and Obama will never appear in the same sentence. McCain was a critic of Iraq ground policy from day 1 and it was his call for more troops that was the ultimate game breaker. On Iraq +1 for McCain. Also being anti-Iraq for partisan reasons is not tantamount to being a "peace" candidate. FDR ran as one in 1940 and so did LBJ in 1964. Both of them were disasters if you happened to be an 18 year old male. If the economy falters (which it will) I have no idea how Obama or the fickle electorate will react when we invent some "crisis" on the Afghan-Pakistan border ect. Obama's foreign policy team doesn't exactly wear flowers in their hair.
Here is a interesting quote i just read on another site "Obama's consituency in Illinois is ten times the size of the entire state population of Alaska." Alaska's population 683,478 She was also mayor of a town of 9,000
