Who is patient zero and where did they come from?

  1. Attached below is three linked articles covering the serious issue of vaccination as found on arstechnica.com.

My concern is our vulnerability to almost legacy viruses, at this point, due to insufficient health security measures at our border entry points and anti-vaccine parents who not only risk their child to viruses that can be much more dangerous than the vaccine, but risks our community or even put our country at risk as well.

The bottom article shows how some threats are hard to anticipate and further validates the importance of vaccinations or other health measures are necessary for community protection. Additionally, some Liberal communities has been attempting to remove chloridation amd floridation from their water supplies. Having water that has antiseptic properties reduces disease propagation. Although chlorine and flouride can have adverse health effects, a rampant virus or bacteria can be much worse.

By patient zero, I mean who was the first patient who caught the virus in their communitiy and by extension, how and where did they originally get exposed to the virus in the first place.

One thing Latin America did well was having decent vaccination programs. I don't think anti-vaxxing has taken off much there so your kid is likelier to get measles from some European or Canadian tourist. Hell, the illegals may be increasing the herd immunity if you look at the numbers of some of these anti-vax states.

  3. One concern is if we as a species are causing our immune system to become weaker over time due to a reduction of immune system “stressors” such as viruses, mold, fungus spores, and pollen. Some nasty viruses can cause nasty permanent damage or kill, but are we ultimately setting ourselves up to be almost wiped out with our weaker immune systems by a emergent virus strain of some sort?

We have already seen some children who were brought up in very clean homes and not exposed to much play outside as babies as having much higher allergy and asthma rates.

Doesn't matter, our immune system hasn't and will never be able to cure itself of a virus. Which is where vaccines come in, by safely introducing the virus, it gives the body a fighting chance.

Bacteria is a whole different animal, and I agree that children aren't exposed to enough of them due to pampering. The danger here are antibiotic resistant bacteria due to lax pill regimen and some of it passing through our food.

The real threat are prions moving forward. It's prevalent in game meat.

  5. I associate prions with meat processed with brain matter. Eat A few misfolded proteins, even if well cooked, and you’re done.

that's certainly a vector, and possibly how some types may have spread into the wild.
