Russia has tiger by the tail. All they have done is to scare all their neighbors. Of course those neighbors will be more likely to join NATO or form alliances against Russian expansion. And what's the pay off for Russia? More sanctions on an economy already on the verge of collapse? Really bad trade on Putin's part.

Putin is traumatized and angry because Russia lost so many satellite states in East Europe when the Berlin Wall fell.
He wanted to start the resurrection of the Russian empire, but he lost Ukraine. Which is in surface 57% of all the total area of the all the satellite states that were lost before.
He will try till he dies to take back Ukraine. His mistake was to take Crimea first. The whole Western world was angry at Putin after that. His attempt to take Ukraine now became impossible because the Western world would never accept that. If we would accept that, Putin would later take over other ares too. He is busy now taking over Belarus.

"The Western World" doesn't give a damn. Biden is senile, Germany is too dependent on Russia's gas/oil, and there is no willingness in the rest of Europe to actually DO anything other than write strong-worded letters. Putin has (due to a huge very well run propaganda machine) his population's support for what he does, and the sanctions will, even if strong at first (which I doubt they will be), be watered down because, as Lenin has put it, capitalists will happily sell ropes to be hanged with. (Yes, I know, the attribution of the quote is in doubt, but the meaning is apropos all the same).

  10. On the flip-side, after WWI ended, everyone wondered how the 'fuck' did the actions of just one person simply assassinating someone else, result in every European country breaking down into taking sides by paper-alliances and causing the largest war ever and loss of life.

    Was it worth it?
