Is this the week he gets benched?

  2. He should be so that he can rest his knee and get ready for next season. He came back too early and was too overly confident after his incredible rookie season. Live and learn, and come back even stronger next year.

  3. You can't always judge a QB based on this. Luck today throws 4TD's, 0 Int's, 113 QBR rating and his team was blown out.

It looks like Shanahan wants out of Washington.

Report: Mike Shanahan leaning toward starting Kirk Cousins

The drama is set to unfold fast and furious in Washington as the Redskins season comes to a close. And the opening act (of the second set?) is underway: reports emerged Wednesday morning that Mike Shanahan is leaning toward starting Kirk Cousins.

Jay Glazer of Fox Sports reports that "people inside [the Redskins] building" are "under the impression" Cousins will start.

Additionally, a source specifically tells Glazer -- re: Cousins starting -- that it "looks that way but won't be sure he settles on it [until] practice." That sourced added that "Mike can always change."

That change would/could come in the form of an argument from current/deposed starter Robert Griffin III.

After reports emerged that Shanahan wanted to resign last year, Shanahan promptly didn't completely deny those reports on Sunday before noting on Monday that he was contemplating shutting Griffin down for the year. You don't do that to your starting, star quarterback -- assuming he's healthy like Shanahan said -- unless you're trying to Costanza your way out of your job.

With the Redskins reportedly thinking about withholding cash from Shanny, that could be the exact plan. So, everyone's operating under the assumption that Cousins is the starter for the last three weeks of the season. But RG3 will have a chance to try and persuade Shanahan that he should start, either verbally or in practice.

That means three more days of heightened tension and drama in Washington as a 3-10 team with the second-worst point differential in the NFL (-128) gets ready to play the Falcons in Atlanta.

It's only going to get messier from here.

  5. He needs to be benched (sat) the rest of the year because he's not healthy and what's the point in potentially having your franchise quarterback get hurt in the final 3 meaningless games of your season.

RGIII needs to come in to training camp next year healthy and ready to work. This season will hopefully be just a blip on the radar. Time will tell.

  6. Shanahan has done a miserable job with the Redskins, plus he is a nasty little weasel, trashing players who get in his doghouse to the press anonymously. He did it with Albert Haynesworth, he did it with Donovan McNabb, he did it with Fred Davis, now he is doing it with RG III. He may have had some points on some of these guys, but you hav eto make the best of what you have, not waste an asset.

He took over a team with a decent to pretty good defense, switched to a 3-4 and they have been dreadful ever since. Special teams have gone from ok to dreadful. Last week Solomon Wilcox, the color guy, called their special teams' play in the first half the worst he had ever seen.

Shanahan's defenders are whining about the salary cap penalty, but they have pretty much the same team as last year.

Sitting RG III now for injury concerns is a tacit admission he should not have been playing all along. It was painfully obvious he was not fully recovered and getting the crap knocked out of him week after week isn't helping.

Shanahan has one year left on a $7 mill per year contract. It would be fitting that Snyder force him to return and serve out the year. Why should he be able to skip out of town with $7 mill and let someone else suffer with the mess of a team he put together? There are rumors Shanahan has his eyes on the Houston job where son Kyle had a good record as offenisve coordinator prior to joining his dad with the Skins. If he can get Snyder to can him, he will be available. If not, he is probably looking at his legacy being permanently eroded and he can forget Canton.

Right now there is a highstakes staredown going on between Snyder and Shanahan. Snyder can't really tolerate another year like this one, which seems likely if he returns. But he doesn't want to pay this weasel $7 mill more for nothing. As noted, Shanahan is desperate to get out of what has turned into a bad situation for not only him but son Kyle. Kyle was on the short list of hot young coordinators when he took this job. No more. He couldn't get along with McNabb, who has a rep as a class guy. Now he can't get along with RG III, who also has a good rep.

Another year, a new coach, and a lot of new weapons. Some analyst are even going so far as to say that the Redskins have the best receiving corps in the league.

There are no excuses. The Redskins gave up three number ones for the worst QB in the NFL East. Will RGIII actually bother to show up this year or will it be another year of bad quarterback play, followed by lame excuses?

  8. Good questions. Time will tell. The good thing about the NFL is that careers are generally so short, years of poor decision-making can get turned around fairly quickly.

The worrying thing about the Redskins is that they don't have anyone making decisions who has a track record fo success. GM Bruce Allen has never really been in charge of putting a team together. He was more of a salary cap and contract guy. New head coach Jon Gruden is a first time head coach who never had roster responsibility either in the NFL.

Their choices in the draft reflected a cautious approach, preferring low drama players with proven production at the college level instead of guys with potentially higher ceilings. There are already whispers that OT Morgan Moses of Virginia, their third round pick and one they were pretty excited to nab there, is no where near ready to play, ie a potential bust.

RGIII has a lot of pressure on him. He has a new coach, a shaky line and new faces at receiver. One problem the media is glossing over is the Redskins' lack of size at WR. They have one of the smallest cast of wideouts in the league. Adding DeSean Jackson didn't help that. Statistical analysis has shown a marked correlation between receiver size and production. The small quick guy is the exception now. You can use one Wes Welker in your lineup. It's hard to be successful with two or three on the field at the same time.

Special teams play really destroyed the Redskins last season. They can't help but get better and did make an effort to bring in some proven special team guys, plus they have a new teams coach.

The team's defense was a joke last year and has obvious holes still, particularly in the back end. A weak pass rush last year added pressure to a suspect secondary. If they can avoid injuries, they should be marginally better, but this is a team that will have to put up points to win. They have the makings of what could be an explosive offense. RGIII may not be among the league's elite QBs, but he is far and away the best athlete playing the position. His rookie year he was able to run past defensive backs at 3/4 speed. He has a big arm and quick release. He needs to improve his accuracy and working through his progressions. Typically he has been a one look and go guy. Mainly, he has to avoid taking crushing hits. He has already taken way too many and is at the point where his career could be hanging in the balance.

How panicked must Washington Redskins fans be? This clown looked awful. They gave up 3 first rounders for this guy. WOW. RGIII is not starting QB material in the NFL. He ought to be benched today because the Redskins have better options than this guy.

  10. He looked pretty bad last night for sure. The trade they made to draft him is looking like one of the worst in league history. His backups are not very attractive alternatives though. Kirk Cousins looks good playing against second and third stringers. In real games, he has shown a penchant for turnovers. He doesn't have a very strong arm, which is why he was a fourth round draft selection.
