What's the best way to get the skills to crush the market?

First rule, don't attempt to "crush the market". Seriously, find a small edge and exploit it, don't be greedy and don't try to become a millionaire overnight.

Remember, if you manage to make 10% a year consistently you're already better than the vast majority of professional money managers. If you could get mentoring, take an online course, or learn by trial and error and do better than that, then by definition you're assuming the entire finance industry is made up of idiots who haven't figured that out yet. I've learned that any investment thesis that depends on everyone else in the industry being an idiot is a pretty strong indicator that I'm the idiot!

Spend 5-10 years analysing charts. Once you've done that you'll be in a better postition than if you learn by paper trading, trade with real money, listen to other people, limit your thinking and build up prejudices etc that usually occurs in professional environments or reading other people's posts in forums.

The real important stuff is not found in books and you won't work it out while taking a battering from the market or during a 9-5 job with all the interruptions and distractions that go with it.

Most people that are willing to be mentors or educators don't know and the ones that do know won't tell you what you need to know in a typical mentor-pupil relationship.

There's common crap that most of the acclaimed experts are good at talking about in their books and then there's a few levels above that crap that no one talks about.

The majority is most often wrong in this ego-driven game so as many have already stated "be careful who you listen to".
