What Was the Bullmarket Like?

Discussion in 'Trading' started by Corso482, Jan 21, 2003.

  1. Things I remember:

The constant pulsating of the market, there was ALWAYS a trade

The whoosh factor was high and addicting, I remember my first real good day, EMC came out with some negative story, stock opened at about 102 or so, so I try to short, didn't get filled, and watched it go straight to 94, with a HUGE vol print, so I bought 1000 (I was new 5-6months) at 94, immediately stock offered at 97..sold it, 3Gs in like 20seconds...then watched it go to 108!!!!

GLW printing 130, then 140 offer (yes $10 wide and printed!)

Long 200 shs of CRA, at like 220 it's already up like $30, 2 seconds later it's 225, so I sold, felt like a king...closed at 275 or so that day

Short GLW at 338 1/2 thinking I should just put a stop at 340, and see what happens since it's been up here twice, maybe a double top? Nah he shows 330 bid, I cover my 800 shares and leave the office at 9:45 (340 was never touched)

One last thing, you could be down 3-5K at 3:50, and still go home net positive for the day on the MOC prints alone.

Shit this is depressing really, God I miss those days.

    Back to reality tommorrow!

I remember in 1999 the day after Thanksgiving all the China related Inet stocks were the range. One of them was up nearly 1000% in the day. People were getting killed trying to short it. It was trading with a 5 point spread as it topped. I didnt trade it, just watched, and cant for the life of me remember the company.

  5. YAHOO MESSENGER LOG – 030900 (excerpt)

aqua007007: well all i know about puma is it went from 119 to 198 since i bot it a couple of weeks ago
sirfye: that's all you'll ever know on Earth, and all you need to know
aqua007007: and thats all i need to know now i cant sell it because its entering that 200 up sucking vortex
sirfye: one of my favorite vortexes
    aqua007007: yes
sirfye: except all the stocks licking at the big round numbers are just a bit too reminiscent of the Nas likcing at its big round number
aqua007007: well i know what you mean, could be a ping pong game
sirfye: seems like Nas nears 5000, Q Jr nears 200, ARTG, FDRY, et al, ETEK at 300 etc., and everyone says, woah, wait a second, this just isn't possible...
aqua007007: its going to happen tho i think. now are we going to eat our lunch all summer?
aqua007007: thats the question, almost too predictable
sirfye: it's not even Spring yet...
sirfye: Hey, if things go EXACTLY like last year, that would be unbelievably great
sirfye: if we're smart, and get out anywhere near the right moment... then back in at anywhere near the right moment... could come to like ourselves very much...
aqua007007: that could be very tricky
sirfye: yes, I know, liking oneself is hard to deal with
aqua007007: that and the musical chair challenge
sirfye: agree... especially if at heart you're a long... and too in love with your little babies to part with them even for a day, much less three months
    * * *
[NOTE: unclear references are to analyst appearing on CNBC]
aqua007007: look out for phcm man
sirfye: have you considered what phcm sounds like?
    aqua007007: of course i have
sirfye: Ihadn't until just this moment
    aqua007007: its ok
sirfye: any stock going up 13.10% has a beautiful sound...
aqua007007: a little raunchy of questionable morality but does come thru
    sirfye: Hey, phcm!
sirfye: if they can't take a joke
sirfye: you do own phcm... known in polite co. as makinglovem... right?
aqua007007: yes have gone thru hell in handbasketm with him
sirfye: looks like GNLB may have started its pump
sirfye: I congratulate Gov. Bush, and he deserves to be flayed alive...
    aqua007007: yes that scumdog!
aqua007007: no one wants reform right now esp. those margined uo wazoo!
    sirfye: ENGA now having mudbath
sirfye: as for margined wazoos... I'm not sure I feel entirely comfortable on that subject... my buying power at Datek is in negative #s, or was last time I was brave enough to check... may be back in positive today...
aqua007007: i think you would be
sirfye: yeah... only CMGI and ENGA dragging me down... QCOM's in Schwab... ARIA, too... I put all my worst trades in Schwab...
sirfye: was a very dumb move on CMGI and ENGA... very low odds that in a market like this with stocks like that that earnings short of unbelievable blowout will push 'em up fast... as for news DW would have to announce that Enga can stop nuclear warheads to go any further than he has already...
    aqua007007: dclk making comeback
sirfye: am glad for my cousin on dclk... and actually I think Enga, Dclk, Tfsm, Avenue A, you name 'em, are all going to be huge over next decade...
sirfye: Inet advertising is like the only way sites can make money...
    aqua007007: i agree
aqua007007: should have bot dclk in 70s they had to save it
sirfye: just they looked so stupid and dishonest...
sirfye: thot they'd be depressed for months
sirfye: thot the gov't furies were going to come down on them, not to mention the privacy alarmists
sirfye: Enga has fallen asleep in the mudbath... Greta Saachi on cell-phone, droning on in the next tub over... aromatherapy candles too strong...
    aqua007007: having lunch
sirfye: some dude at "FS Van Kasper" (?) has just raised his price target on RBAK to $758...
    sirfye: not 757, not 759... not 769, but 758
sirfye: I suppose if it hits 758 39/64, he'll be disappointed...
aqua007007: they were into mstg! i thot it might be kasper the friendly ghost never heard of them again til NOW!
aqua007007: must be related to ethel mertz
    aqua007007: maybe fred
    sirfye: sans doute
    aqua007007: my baby clrs
    aqua007007: this guys not bad!!!
sirfye: yeah, but his crappy fund's up only 25%... you'd be looking for a temp job if you were up only 25%...
aqua007007: he must have just bot all this stuff last week
sirfye: fdry and artg getting very close again... I hope fdry doesn't start getting uncomfortable again... artg means well...
    aqua007007: yeah right! totally selfless!
sirfye: fdry just needs to understand that you have to try everything out in life...
sirfye: hey, come to think of it, you've never stated whether you're bisexual... I've had to assert my masculinity repeatedly...
    aqua007007: nyet
sirfye: never even tempted? Even in the fashion industry?
aqua007007: no! prefer a big strong male
    aqua007007: kyocera!!!!!!
    sirfye: what's its ticker?
    aqua007007: kyo
sirfye: I got it up 1?
sirfye: though it does have a pretty name
aqua007007: had a big run, bought q's handsets
    aqua007007: say it very fast
sirfye: right, cuz it's Japanese I guess
sirfye: say it slowly it sound like an Italian expression
aqua007007: we say it like a pre hari kari pronouncement
aqua007007: phcm!!!!!! all of em!!!!!! on fire again!!! love to see these dead animals revive!
    sirfye: what a relief...
    aqua007007: what?
sirfye: all that green, major relief
    sirfye: SirFye was contemplating Kyocera...
aqua007007: its a hot tamale here
sirfye: so someone goose ENga then...
aqua007007: she has her own mysterious ways
    aqua007007: as you know
sirfye: she's doing one of her, I'm too comfortable here don't bother me things... though actually I sense an iddy biddy movement... no... hmmm
aqua007007: im envisioning le q doing a phcm some day soon
    aqua007007: it must happen
    sirfye: that would be bootyful...
aqua007007: we have PAID for our pleasure!
sirfye: maybe after Taiwan erections are ovel
aqua007007: you are so funny! look jnpr died the minute i FINALLY bot some
sirfye: poor ATHM... had it for a little while last year... got to know some of the regs... they were sure it'd take off end of 99...
    sirfye: that's one snakebit stock
sirfye: condolences on JNPR, btw... maybe it's time for me to buy some?
sirfye: course then it would REALLY tank
sirfye: I couldn't do that to you
aqua007007: thanks you are tres gallant
sirfye: must now walk da pooches... see if you can hold the line while I'm out, salright?
    aqua007007: ok
sirfye: unless market tanks, think JNPR will pop very soon
    aqua007007: why
    aqua007007: you mean this aft
sirfye: chart: seems to go five or six days consolidating, then jump... then consolidate... forever and ever... world without end... amen
    aqua007007: ok
    aqua007007: going to rb phcm
["rb" = check Raging Bull message board]
sirfye: you do that... RBAK up 26+
aqua007007: need more and more and more
sirfye: RBAK? Remember to sell when it hits 758.

  6. YAHOO MESSENGER LOG - 030900 EXCERPT (cont.)

aqua007007: well i have this problem
sirfye: and which problem is that?
    sirfye: inability to sell?
aqua007007: yeah and that navi is so awful for me ...the WORST
aqua007007: enga could have done that with luck
sirfye: hey, I sold NSOL at like 60...
    sirfye: ENGA may still...
sirfye: I don't even remember where ITWO was when I sold it... very low
aqua007007: pls dont tellme any more tho that stock has confounded us...went up when they lost their exclusivity...
    aqua007007: pls stop
sirfye: I guess grown-up traders set targets, some even write their sell orders and put 'em up on Island "good until canceled"
sirfye: it's where a lot of those twilight zone asks come from
    aqua007007: i know
aqua007007: im still an infant trader/nontrader
    sirfye: goo-good gawgaw... (spits up)
    aqua007007: women having it all...AAAAHHHHH
sirfye: (playing with spinning mickey mouse thing)
sirfye: lots of jealousy, moaning, whining on ENGA board by those who bought ENGA instead of NAVI... good sign I think... much better than everyone predicting 250 by five minutes ago
aqua007007: well i dont know but id like my navi back thank you
    aqua007007: who took it anyway?
    aqua007007: nsol up 60
sirfye: didn't you tell me just a few seconds ago not to bring that up?
sirfye: Focus on the pleasure, not the pain
    aqua007007: im so upset
sirfye: That comes from a porno movie, by the way
aqua007007: m just called hes out of town again was reading on train...vrsn ceo said nsol was most undervalued co on internet. p&g ceo history
sirfye: well you didn't expect vrsn ceo to say NSOL a major pump, completely worthless piece o did you?
aqua007007: are you the type of guy i would be embarrassed to go into the video store with or what?
sirfye: depends on your mood, I guess...
sirfye: sex in relationships gets killed by judgment... misplaced guilt and inhibition... I should know...
aqua007007: do you want to explain that
sirfye: only if you want me to
    aqua007007: go ahead
sirfye: that sounds non-committal... also will have to be careful not to type in statements in the JB box...
aqua007007: yes tell me what happened you do sound like you have a conflict going on...
sirfye: wait a second here... JB's on a freaking tirade...
sirfye: lots of Capital letters... lots of FREAKING this and FREAKING that
    sirfye: RBAK over 360...
sirfye: I almost sold it to cover margin problems
sirfye: almost panic-sold it when that weirdo on board was bringing up supposed fraud...
aqua007007: i remember you were very concerned
    sirfye: am massaging JB now...
aqua007007: nice little therapy group we have here
sirfye: not hard, just got him to start talking about MDSI... stock is an unbelievable killer.... makes ARIA look like uh... ARIA
    aqua007007: really
    sirfye: check out the chart...
    aqua007007: ok
sirfye: JB logged out...hope he's not mad... he was complaining about seeing red and how much he hated it and I suggested SirFye's Trading Technique #2.
    aqua007007: whats that
sirfye: you know where you stare really hard, close your eyes, then open them facing a white wall...
    aqua007007: oh yeah
sirfye: Want RBAK to hit 400 so it can end in the 370s or so...
sirfye: would take CSCO buyout I'm afraid
aqua007007: now back to your sexual conflicts...how did your mother and sister take to your work re: pornography?
    aqua007007: nsol up 76
    sirfye: non-judgmentally...
    sirfye: stop lashing out
aqua007007: so they accepted it as an intellectual exploration
    aqua007007: of sorts
sirfye: just a sec... gota nuke the remnants of thisAM's coffee
sirfye: none left, had to switch to sparkling water + fruit juice
    * * *
sirfye: my mother was just happy I was no longer getting arrested for protesting nuclear power
    aqua007007: i see
sirfye: one of the things that appeals to men about pornography, and is frequently mistaken by female observers for violence against women
sirfye: is that the starlets are completely unencumbered, or appear to be completely unencumbered, by inhibitions
    aqua007007: is what
sirfye: it's often when they would appear, in the abstract, to be "humiliated" that they show that THEY are the ones who are in control...
sirfye: it's as though they come out on the other side of subordination, and through a simple act of will and imagination, establish complete superiority
sirfye: RBAK is very cool stock
aqua007007: well i havent seen very much porno so i dont really know about that but i could make a case for that being a nessecary path to power of any sort for women thru history...
    sirfye: exactly
    sirfye: very Hegelian
    aqua007007: thesis antithesis synthesis
    aqua007007: sort of
    sirfye: no definitely
sirfye: the women who understand that well turn their men into happy slaves
aqua007007: i think maybe you just have a very high intellect in combo with very high testosterone levels and an irregular sex life (just surmising, have no idea really)
sirfye: well, that wouldn't contradict what I said... though might explain why I would say it
    sirfye: you clocking RBAK?
    aqua007007: am now!!! shoot
    aqua007007: nsol up 81
    aqua007007: jeeeeeeeez
sirfye: AAARGGHH! let me be happy with my RBAK!
    sirfye: and my beautiful FDRY!
sirfye: I got you (back) into RBAK, you got me into FDRY... maybe we're not so bad for each other
aqua007007: any 2 who can discuss hegelian dialectics, stocks and sex in the same 10 min cant be all bad
    aqua007007: among other topics!
sirfye: isn't it hilarious to be watching stocks like those two and hear Pisani talking about "drift" in the market?
    aqua007007: yes
aqua007007: cmrc is really on move lately too
sirfye: yeah... that blowhard stocknsnock really missed that one...
    sirfye: sorry
    aqua007007: cant remember that
sirfye: well, I don't really want to remind you... but you were thinking, very presciently, that it looked like a good buy what with the conventional wisdom (CW, hereafter) against it...
aqua007007: what did stocknsock say again
sirfye: so I e-mailed his very smarty-pants-sounding take on the B2B space...
sirfye: that it couldn't move... typical valuation call of no value
    sirfye: RBAK up over 50
    aqua007007: oh yeah
sirfye: smart traders might sell right here
    aqua007007: love that
    aqua007007: they might
    aqua007007: im not too smart!
    sirfye: me neither...
    sirfye: maybe next year
sirfye: or next week when it hits 758
    aqua007007: maybe in grade 2
    sirfye: right
aqua007007: still in 1st grade here
sirfye: still playing with baubles over here
aqua007007: m advancing to my first barbie. its trader barbie she has messy hair and wears combat pants
sirfye: at this rate, they'll have to use the split to announce a split
    aqua007007: like jdsu
    aqua007007: 222splits in one
sirfye: and you know how much respect and admiration I have for splits
    sirfye: my absolute favorite phenomenon
    sirfye: I worship splits
    aqua007007: of all sots 2/1 3/2 3/1 4/1 6/7 8/6 4/3 90/87
    sirfye: every kind!
    sirfye: LOL
aqua007007: reverse ones too? heard those are tricky
    sirfye: uhhhh
aqua007007: thats when they TAKE AWAY your shares....the killer being expelled for fuckin 60 days!!!!!
aqua007007: what a country! gun in school not in line w/ policy
    aqua007007: rbak 383
    aqua007007: +
    aqua007007: 385+
    aqua007007: 387

    aqua007007: i love you!!!!
    sirfye: I love you, too
    aqua007007: were going to 400
    sirfye: could be
    aqua007007: on a roll
    aqua007007: maybe we should sell
sirfye: and you know what I say to those smart traders?
    sirfye: PHCM!
    aqua007007: no
aqua007007: maybe that was the climax there
sirfye: yeah... well how much further could we go in one day?
    aqua007007: nsol+75
sirfye: porno, Hegel, up 60, I love you.... what have I missed?
    sirfye: oh yeah, Barbie...
    aqua007007: shes a bit plastic-y
sirfye: then there's the still unresolved issue between FDRY and ARTG...
aqua007007: look at adsp as soon as you see them on afterhours ticker alot, just BUY ask questions later
aqua007007: my new scientific trading theory
sirfye: we can put that in the book...
aqua007007: alot of canadian companies get into crises,,,corl brex cinr livent...very scary
sirfye: man, up 60 just on a split and a price target and a re-release of an innacurate market share study
sirfye: of course the Siara acquisition is huge for RBAK...
    aqua007007: 53
    sirfye: whatevuh
sirfye: probly was the climax... but it was good for me...
    sirfye: 389!
    aqua007007: not bad not bad
sirfye: they say that Siara is nifty.. plus it sounds you know... very clean and pure and sexy... very supermodel
    aqua007007: youre right
sirfye: we should have a radio show
aqua007007: very targetted listening audience group
    sirfye: or maybe Comedy Central...
    aqua007007: financial howard stern
sirfye: Jim Rome... you probably don't know about him...
    aqua007007: no
    sirfye: sports talk radio...
    aqua007007: oh god
sirfye: used to listen to him before I was into stocks
sirfye: but the format could be moved over to financials very easily...
aqua007007: here we go navi again AAAAAHHHH
sirfye: babe... hey... better to have two or three stocks in the top 10 than just one at number 1
sirfye: jugots RBAK, FDRY, PHCM... so PHCM!
    aqua007007: i VANT ZEM ALL

  7. gaj

    gaj

MALL (i think) gapping open 50 points to 100? down to 60 in the first 5 minutes, then back up most of the way. that's from vague memory.

stupid things i did, but that made money:
    > GNET was halted. opened, after halt, at 95 up 10 points (paul allen got some?). bought 100 and 105 calls. sold out that day or the next when the stock was at 120ish.
    > verio formed a cup and handle, broke out on blodgett upgrade of it. was home from work, bought calls 10 minutes in, and made a real nice profit at the end of the day.

stupid thing that DIDN'T make money:
    > playing OTC stocks. ugh.

    smart thing that made money:
    > CORL running from 10 to 34 in 2 days. next day, pre-market, shorted at 44. covered 10 minutes into the market at 34.
    > MSTR on their earnings miss. shorted pre-market at about 150. covered before market opened at like 110. left 60 points on the table.

smart thing that DIDN'T make money:
    > JDSU buying SDLI at a stupid high price. shorted JDSU that morning, knowing that the arbitragers would drive JDSU down. they didn't.
    > shorted MSTR on a bounce from 25->60 near 50. not smart part: shorted too much, covered near the top.

though some would say "smart = made money, stupid = didn't make money!"

i also liked getting IPO shares through etrade, and selling them for nice profits. it helped make my year...

  9. Late 1998 I believe, JBOH from $.25 to $20 in a few days (sold at 5$ though from about .50).....

1999: RAMP IPO from like $12 closing IPO day, gapped to $19 at open, had about 4k shares.......
