Tell them the truth. You are...a day trader. What is so embarrassing about making money at something, Do you come from a long line of school teachers or fire fighters...Something noble like that? If they feel you are nothing more than a gambler....then show them something nice, like a 200K wrist watch -- or anything fancy, schmancy, that they cannot necessarily afford. They may hate you, but definitely respect you.
Why not tell them the truth. Strangers who ask you that at social gatherings are usually just striking up a conversation.
