what licenses can one get without sponsorship

You could get the Series 3 on your own if trading futures. Most (if not all) other licenses require firm sponsorship.

Is there any benefit to obtaining this? I had a friend that took it but it was to be a broker, not trading.

Is the exam focused more on rules/regulations and sales or would there be value to the individual trader?
