What kind of workstation to buy? (Dell, HP,...please help a non computer guy)

  1. No, not from the "corner box store". Even if I had, it was still an HP. (Yes, under warranty. They paid for the repair, but not for the scorched desk... :))

However, you're correct about the "progression" of video displays. Makes total sense to buy a 4K TV to serve as monitor rather than 4X 1080ps. The former problem with "TVs as monitors" was about "large pixels viewed from short distance". Today, 4K pixels are so small, 4K TVs serve well as multi-monitor displays.

I've been involved in "multi-monitor for trading" from waaay back and expensive. It's better now and more affordable than ever. (Interestingly.... my initial involvement with ET was about multi-monitor expansions for trading.)

  2. I haven't seen one up close yet but i've heard good reviews on 4k 40" monitors not TV for around $500 bucks. For the price of cables, 4x stand, the 4k monitor appears reasonably priced.

  3. I checked out large 4K TVs at Costco from close up. Seems the pixels are small enough that one might use them in the place of multi-monitor. Certainly worth looking into.

4K would be better on the eyes, multi monitors is still my preference verses one big 40.

Disagree, still tons of software applications have huge issues with scaling fonts and visual items properly in 4k. Unscaled hardly any text is readable in 4k due to the small fonts, and upscaling causes in many application a blurry image that strains the eyes. I would still and still do prefer HD over 4k as computer monitor. In fact I bought a set of 4 1920x1080 screens to replace my over 8 year old screens that are starting to cause issues.

that is true for images and video and software applications that properly scale. If you want the names of some software apps that are widely used but do not yet properly scale in 4k let me know. Install such app and check out how it looks when you look at it on a 4k screen and scale the font in order to make the miniature text fonts legible. You will exactly see what I am talking about...

lol, and you are telling us that you can read the quotes and charts and what have you on that screen, that you showed us an image of, from a distance more than a foot away? I can't.

  10. i have no problem reading 4k 39" monitor but it's not for everyone, especially blind people. FYI it's bigger than 17.3" laptop running 1080p, which I also have. BTW do you use a laptop? It's most likely larger font than your laptop unless you have it set to 480p lol. No disrespect to blind people, I mean Zzzz1 hahaha
