Buddha is not god. He was just a guy. No one "worships" buddha anymore than you would worship a college philosophy/psychology/astronomy professor. Buddhism is really more of a philosophy than a religion. It also fits well with modern psychology and science. I don't call myself "buddhist". My understandings and interpretations of life and the universe tend to agree with buddhist philosophy. Some describe buddhism as atheist and others and others interpret it as "if the universe is everything and we are all one in the same, then we are all god" but not in the sense that you have magical powers or anything, just in the sense that you are everything and eternal.
