What is the Best Way to Lose 20 pounds and keep it off...

  1. Atkins has a huge list of veggies they recommend you eat even during the restrictive Phase 1. Granted the net carb values are low INITIALLY but vegetables are never excluded. After the initial adjustment phase you scale them up considerable. People think low carb is no veggies so your comment is very common but it is just not entirely true.

I have not seen any diet from Atkins to Keto to Paleo that recommends cutting out vegetables.

I agree with you that cutting out vegetables is dumb but I have not seen any recommendation to do that.

  2. Oen thing I heard that Weight Watchers actually does that is nice under their point system is they give many vegetables 0-1 point values to encourage you eat as much as possible. I think the American diet is completely devoid of enough veggies (french fries does not count). Veggies are seen as the side dish decoration that is small and not enough or a sald filled with empty lettuce and drowned in shitty dressing :).

Overall what you said is almost a given. unless you are doing 2 a days or doing a lot of one sport. The 2 periods of time I was in great shape, I ate and drank what I wanted but I was playing tennis or surfing for a few hours and then going to the gym or running after that.

This claim is false. I won my battle with "excess fat" in the gym. Diet was a secondary aspect that adapted naturally as my body adapted due to the cardio work. Note that most people don't do nearly enough hard cardio though so those without the will power or having physical ailments you may be right about them. This is true for a lot of people given my observations at my gym, including many people in their 20s. I feel fortunate to have been very active sports wise my whole life especially as a kid. Some people really need to hire a coach to help them with things like running form, intervals, building a program etc.

In my case, your claim just doesn't hold up. I can pretty much eat anything I want and the main variable is the frequency, distance, and speed of my runs or rowing. Now I do eat better but you have the cause effect backwards in my situation. And I do think that for some people, obsessing about diet or fads like fasting is counterproductive and can lead to the roller coaster of losing weight and gaining it back throughout your life. My way I lost the weight, fluctuate somewhat depending on workout frequency but the initial 20 pounds has been gone permanently.

Except that it's not a given, and you really need to ask yourself why the weight comes back. I haven't gained the "extra" weight back in 5 years and I wasn't obviously overweight in the first place. Now everyone is different but I need 3-4 sessions a week the first 6 months and since then 2-3 sessions a week is all I need. Now some would find my runs a little too intense for themselves, which is fine. However, everything I've read is that once you reach a certain age, most need to rest your muscles for a day free of intense work out. I find every second day is optimum for me with 3 sessions a week; if I get busy I'm ok with 2 sessions a week for basic maintenance and anything less then that impacts on my stamina and to a small degree my weight.

The key is find routine that works for you, can be incorporated into your life, and stick with it. I cannot understate that drinking mostly water/coffee helps tremendously. I don't crave other drinks and rarely drink alcohol anymore so that helps. The one surprise for me ( besides the fact I had an extra 20 lbs. and wasn't even aware of it ) was how well one's body adapts to a new level, and how much easier workouts are as a result.

  6. There are always exceptions to the general rule. These exceptions confirm the validity of the general rule.

In this case you may consider yourself lucky that you are an exception.

  7. before each meal drink big glass of water. Only eat half of whatever your served. Cut out all snacks, all sweets. Drop all sugar drinks, even juice. Eat 5 small meals a day. Remember only half . Exercise twice everyday, morning cardio bike 5 miles with 1 mile sprint at the beginning, evening weights circuit ...

yes... that is what my recent experience would have me conclude.
Although the first few days after you break the fast the gurus indicate that you should eat light to let your digestion system start up again. I got the impression you could get yourself constipated if you eat too heavy at first.

Another benefit which I think I received from the water fast is that my occasional bouts with indigestion and acid reflux have almost entirely disappeared. It feels like the fast hits a reset button in many ways.
