I personally was raised to make my own decisions, and my parents exposed me to all choices and said make up your own mind. They said find out for yourself. it's a way of organizing the subjective world. if it works for you, use it, if it doesn't, and you're comfortable conceptualizing yourself as a predetermined being with no free will, don't. in the end it doesn't really matter to anyone but the person in question. depends on the individual: they can be either or, as can any other mythological constructions.
