First, the majority of hand guns are semi auto. People who throw that around are doing so to make it sound more scary. Other than revolvers, pistols are semi auto. As for guns being available, what you say is true. But its already happened. You can't undo it. I could get an automatic weapon if I wanted, tomorrow. You just need to know where to go. You could also mod one if you had patience and resources. I don't care whether we have state or federal laws, just enforce them. If you pass a federal law because you think a state law has no teeth or is not enforced, then its just as stupid if there's no federal enforcement. The issue isn't the law, its the (lack of) enforcement.
I know they can be obtained legally if you jump threw a few hoops, but illegally they are virtually non existent on the streets. How often does a gang banger or mass murderer use a full auto gun to kill? Virtually never because they cant get them.I know they can be modded but criminals don't even go that route because its the same 10 year jail sentence if caught with one.
They don't use a fully auto weapon because they don't have to. A semi auto one does the job just fine. Its a juice vs. squeeze argument. Why go through the extra hoops to get an automatic weapon? Anyone who understands them knows they're not as accurate, and if its incrementally a bigger pain in the ass to get, why do it? A semi automatic weapon does what they need it to. That is why they don't get them.
No, you didn't. But you'll frequently hear media and emotional arguments start that way because the "semi auto" phrase, unless specifically used to call attention to a type of firearm for distinguishing performance, is used to strike fear.
