If one was short (god forbid) in this situation, and they had a stop loss in place, with a spike like that, would your order potentially get filled at the top of the spike or somewhere WAY UP THERE, when it stalled, and then came crashing down?
Quite possibly! That's why stop loss LIMIT orders are used, although you can get bent over with no execution once in a while, nobody said trading wasn't risky.

anyone else noticed/noticing lately that tradestations CL datafeed misses lots of ticks, but when it finally catches up, it doesn't always catch up to the right price? bids and asks not accurate most of the time either off hours and in back months er2 feed also is erronious at the moment... not reporting the downticks wondering what's up
