A retail trader is a guy sitting at home trading his own money. The trader keeps all his profits and losses. A proprietary trader is a guy who trades through a prop firm that gives him greater leverage (i.e. small capital contribution, huge buying power). The profits are split. That would be a very crude description. Google the terms for more info, or use the search button on this website.
1. Retail trader: http://www.trade2win.com/traderpedia/Retail_trader Pro trader: http://www.trade2win.com/traderpedia/Professional_trader 2. There is no such thing as "direct access" to the forex market. CME are currently trying to launch a centralised forex exchange, but true interbank forex is a disparate OTC market and still often done by bankers/brokers with their cronies over the phone. Retail forex brokers are usually bucket shops who make their own market. The closest thing to "direct access" would be the wholesale currency ECNs such as hotspot, lava and currenex. IB's IdealPro sort of comes close second for the smaller trader.
