Dell's computer business plan is the best(Key is almost no inventory business) Compaq takes about 30days to produce. Dell takes about 4 days. Computer part price drops daily & weekly. Guess who's got the advantage of it. That does not mean Dell stock price will be sky rocking. Current Dell's profit margin is about 4%. That is not bad compare to other companies which can not even make profit in recession environment Personally, when I buy computer, I research Dell's configuration system which is about $2200. After that, I search Ebay for simliar system computer with less than $800. That is how I do computer shop. Good luck to Dell!
Isnt there a stock options situation brewing at Dell which could be very detrimental? If they have to properly account for their options ,they aint making no 4%.
graeco nice post. The accounting of the last decade is going to be the straw that breaks this investment cycle's back. So far the problems have been limited to high-flyers that the public could care less about. Qwest, WCOM, Enron, Adelphia. Wait tilll the brand names start restating . This is just the tip of the iceberg. Banks are next! If you're not in, you better get in, because...
I have bought 2 desktops and 1 laptop from DELL in the past, but I am starting to sour on them. They have figured out lots of little tricks to milk customers of extra $$ on their website. For instance, you can't configure a Inspiron 8200 with the 15" UltraScharp UXGA (1600x1200) Display without MS Office XP! http://www.dell.com/us/en/bsd/products/minicat_inspn_8200.htm If you click Microsoft Works, and 15" Ultrasharp UXGA Display, (other settings don't matter) and press Continue, it says "You have selected an invalid configuration. Please select another option." @#$@#% It turns out you can only get the 15" Super XGA+ display (1400x1050) if you don't want MS Office. I use OpenOffice (http:/www.openoffice.org) which is free, has 99% of the features of OfficeXP, and reads/writes MS formats .doc, .ppt, etc. I don't want to pay the extra $180 for Office XP SBE or $379 for Office XP Pro. Dell and Microsoft scratching each other's back, I'm sure... Also, DELL has switched from offering "Instant Savings" to almost exclusively to rebates. REBATES! Yuck. I hate having to deal with rebates. I won't order from them unless they have a deal like 'Free Double Memory' and 'Free Double Harddrive' and 'Free DVD upgrade'. I don't need any $200 REBATE! I wonder if DELL is accounting for these rebates properly, i.e. if they sold a $2000 computer before $200 rebate, do they record that as $2000 revenue or $1800? And I'm sure everyone has seen the extra costs they try to slip in on support and services. The default for Inspiron 8200 is "3 Year Limited Warranty plus 3 Year On-site Service and CompleteCare Protect Your Investment" but this costs $388 more over the "1 Year Limited Warranty plus 1 Year Mail-In Service". And the absolute classic is they dare to ask you to pay for "Technical Support Priority Call Routing Service, 1 Year [add $39]" or "Technical Support Priority Call Routing Service, 3 Years [add $69]" Fleance
This guy doesn't seem to think much of them. http://stockcharts.com/def/servlet/Favorites.CServlet?obj=ID105269
A basic rule of shortology (rule # 38) is don't short stocks that have a product you can put in a box. Dell is not a shortologists stock. Short a stock that has a "really really good idea" like booking tee-times online and such. These up markets are great for honing a shortlogists skill !!
