Let's see what the church thinks of the COVID-deniers vision of a "no lockdown paradise" Brazil’s bishops sharpen criticism of Bolsonaro as COVID deaths rise https://cruxnow.com/church-in-the-a...-criticism-of-bolsonaro-as-covid-deaths-rise/ Amid a devastating second wave of COVID-19, Brazil’s bishops have sharpened their criticism of the administration of President Jair Bolsonaro. In an April 16 statement released at the end of its 58th general assembly – entirely held on-line due to the pandemic – the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil (CNBB) said that “discourses and attitudes that deny the reality of the pandemic, show disdain for health and safety measures, and threaten the rule of law” are “unacceptable.” “it’s necessary to pay attention to science, incentivize the use of face masks and social distancing, and secure vaccination for all, as soon as possible,” the document read. Since the beginning of the pandemic, Bolsonaro has downplayed the risks of COVID-19 by promoting public gatherings, repeatedly refused to wear a face mask during events, opposing the imposition of a national lockdown, and criticizing Brazilian state governors who enforced restrictions on economic activities in order to reduce the spread of the disease. The president has also expressed doubts about the efficacy of the vaccines, especially CoronaVac, produced by the Chinese pharmaceutical company Sinovac and bought by São Paulo State governor João Dória Jr., who may run for president in 2022. The bishops’ letter emphasized that all state institutions should be mindful of the country’s constitution, which establishes the right to healthcare. “That requires competence and lucidity,” the document said. Bolsonaro’s hesitancy towards the vaccine has delayed the immunization rollout and only 25 million Brazilians – about 12 percent of the country’s population – have so far received at least one shot. More than 365,000 coronavirus deaths have been reported in Brazil and the average number of daily deaths has been higher than 3,000 over the past few weeks. The Brazilian Supreme Court recently said that the Congress must launch an inquiry on the president’s management of the pandemic, causing a revived radicalism among Bolsonaro and his backers, many of whom openly back a return to military rule in a country that restored democracy only in 1985. Bolsonaro said on April 14 that the ruling was an “interference in his government” and threatened the court. “My friends of the Supreme Court, soon we’ll have an enormous crisis here. […] There’s a powder keg here. There’s people wearing suits who haven’t seen it yet,” he told a group of supporters in Brasilia. Last week, São Paulo’s archbishop, Cardinal Odilo Scherer, said he saw the risk of “a political turnaround towards a dictatorship, or a trend towards a certain fascism which is consolidating more and more.” Those are the concrete risks I see,” he told Roda Viva, a talk show. On April 13, in a press conference during CNBB’s general assembly, Auxiliary Bishop Joaquim Mol Guimarães of Belo Horizonte said that “unexpectedly people started to show up in Brazil, including Brazilian authorities, supporting a dictatorship,” as quoted in the Jesuit website Instituto Humanitas Unisinos. “Asking for a dictatorship is a mental insanity, an insanity of the feelings, a total brutalization of the being,” Guimarães said. The support to a dictatorship in Brazil is “unconceivable”, he added. “A Christian cannot even think on defending a dictatorship. That’s completely out of the possibilities of anyone who wishes to be a disciple of Jesus,” Guimarães said. The CNBB’s April 16 statement also addressed the need to raise public investment in the healthcare system, calling the repeated “attempts to weaken the structure of social protection” in Brazil “unacceptable.” The bishops also addressed the destruction of the environment, especially the Amazon, and the loosening of gun control in the country. “We are worried about the serious problem of the multiple forms of violence disseminated in society, favored by the easy access to guns. Disinformation and hate speech, particularly on social media, generate an unlimited aggressiveness,” the letter read. The bishops declared that the “common home has been subjected to the voracious dynamics of exploitation and degradation.” “It’s urgent to understand that a protected biome productively works for the maintenance and generation of life on the planet, if the fair balance of production and preservation is respected,” the document said. The bishops conclude the letter by calling on Catholics to support the Pact for Life and for Brazil, an initiative launched by the CNBB and other civic organizations in 2020 in order to address the multiples crises currently impacting the lives of the neediest in society. “Let’s assume, with a renovated commitment, concrete initiatives to promote solidarity and sharing,” the bishops said.

When a country does not take proper measures to control a pandemic and lets it run wild then variants develop. These variants are generally more infectious and deadly than the original virus. Let's see what's going on in "no lockdown paradise" Brazil today... Oh... the Senate wants to hold their failed COVID-denying leader responsible for the hundreds of thousands of deaths he caused. I know another nation that should have followed this example. Brazil Senate opens pandemic probe, adding to pressure on Bolsonaro https://www.reuters.com/world/ameri...c-probe-adding-pressure-bolsonaro-2021-04-27/ A Senate inquiry into the Brazilian government's handling of the coronavirus pandemic kicked off on Tuesday, with lawmakers launching what may be a major headache for President Jair Bolsonaro ahead of next year's election. Nearly 400,000 people have died from COVID-19 in Brazil, the second-highest death toll in the world after the United States. Bolsonaro, a far-right former army captain, has drawn harsh criticism due to his long-running efforts to minimize the dangers of the virus, shun masks and push unproven remedies. The inquiry will be overseen by Senator Renan Calheiros, a veteran lawmaker and Bolsonaro critic responsible for the final report. Procedural decisions will fall to Senator Omar Aziz, from the hard-hit state of Amazonas, as committee president and Senate opposition leader Randolfe Rodrigues as vice president. The probe is expected to focus on the government's delays in securing vaccines, including the details of drawn-out negotiations with foreign drugmakers, and missteps in Amazonas, where an infectious new variant sprung up late last year. Beyond the new facts uncovered, the inquiry is expected to generate a political spectacle, with lawmakers pinning Bolsonaro on the ropes ahead of next year's fraught presidential election, where he is almost certain to seek re-election. Although the probe could add to calls for impeachment of Bolsonaro, experts say that is an unlikely outcome. Instead, they suggested the government could deflect blame toward former Health Minister Eduardo Pazuello, who oversaw the chaos in Amazonas and has been criticized for slow vaccine negotiations. Bolsonaro's early efforts to undermine the probe reflect its potential to cause him damage. He and his allies strove to have Calheiros removed from leading the inquiry, alleging he could not be impartial as his son is the governor of Alagoas state, and the inquiry will probe federal funding of state programs. Carla Zambelli, a lower house lawmaker and Bolsonaro ally, convinced a court to block Calheiros on Monday night, but the decision was later reversed by another federal court. On Tuesday, Calheiros said he would act impartially and that the probe would be "deep, technical, focused on its objectives and depoliticized." "The country has a right to know who contributed to the thousands of deaths, and they should be punished," he added. He said he had proposed calling for testimony from current Health Minister Marcelo Queiroga, as well as his predecessors during the pandemic, including Pazuello.

Let's see what records they are breaking in "No Lockdown Paradise" Brazil today... Brazil tops 400,000 virus deaths amid fears of renewed surge https://apnews.com/article/latin-america-brazil-coronavirus-health-88d7ef48e1dff1d23f18b05e8d548ad1 Brazil on Thursday became the second country to officially top 400,000 COVID-19 deaths, losing another 100,000 lives in just one month, as some health experts warn there may be gruesome days ahead when the Southern Hemisphere enters winter. April was Brazil’s deadliest month of the pandemic, with thousands of people losing their lives daily at crowded hospitals. The country’s Health Ministry registered more than 4,000 deaths on two days early in the month, and its seven-day average topped out at above 3,100. That figure has tilted downward in the last two weeks, to less than 2,400 deaths per day, though on Thursday the Health Ministry announced another 3,001 deaths, bringing Brazil’s total to 401,186. Local health experts have celebrated the recent decline of cases and deaths, plus the eased pressure on the Brazilian health care system — but only modestly. They are apprehensive of another wave of the disease, like those seen in some European nations, due to a premature resumption of activity in states and cities combined with slow vaccination rollout. Less than 6% of Brazilians have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19, according to Our World in Data, an online research site. President Jair Bolsonaro, who is now being investigated by a Senate panel over his administration’s handling of the crisis, has repeated he will be the last to get a shot and he has attacked mayors and governors who enforce restrictions to control the virus’ spread. Shortly after the grim landmark was published, Bolsonaro said in a live broadcast on his social media channels that “a big number of deaths has been announced,” adding that he is “sorry for every death.” But he repeated his stance against social distancing measures. “I pray to God so there is not a third wave” of the coronavirus, the president said. “But if the lockdown policies continue this country will be dragged to extreme poverty.” Epidemiologist Wanderson Oliveira, one of the Health Ministry’s top officials at the start of the pandemic, said he expects a third wave to hit by mid-June. He told radio station CBN on Tuesday that the country’s immunization effort won’t prevent a new surge because many people won’t receive shots before winter, when indoor gatherings and activities are more common even in the tropical nation. “Our vaccination is such that in 2022 maybe we will have a much less tragic summer than we did now,” he said, referring to the last few months. He added he expects limited help from local leaders’ partial shutdowns, which have yielded weaker results than European-style lockdowns. Many Brazilians flouted social distancing recommendations and partial shutdowns even in the throes of the pandemic’s peak. Brazil’s vaccination program, though a far cry from its triumphant campaigns of decades past, has slowed the pace of deaths among the nation’s elderly, according to death certificate data published on Monday. Younger people remain unprotected, and have begun falling ill in far greater numbers as a more transmissible variant circulates in Brazil. Adding to concerns, Brazil’s Health Ministry has repeatedly cut its outlook for vaccines in the short term. The country’s two biggest laboratories are facing supply constraints for imports from producers in China and India, which has become the pandemic’s global epicenter.
