‘We are sorry’: Hillsong apologises for Brian Houston conduct breach

  1. The Bible directs believers to test everything and carefully evaluate the actions of church leaders. If a believer isn't careful in who they follow, they may be led by false teachers that appear to be sheep, but are actually wolves in sheep's clothing.

As Christians, we are commanded against following teachers blindly but are told rather to “test everything; hold on to the good” (1 Thessalonians 5:21). The Apostle Peter warns us in 2 Peter 2:1-3 that there will be false teachers in our day just as there were false teachers in his day. Among their false teachings is a denial of the sufficiency of the sacrifice of Christ on the cross to take away sin, which is a common theme among cultists today. Another characteristic of false teachers is the greed which motivates them in everything they do. Paul offers a similar warning to the Ephesian elders in Acts 20:29-31, calling the false teachers “savage wolves” who mercilessly attempt to destroy the faith of the sheep and draw them away from the Shepherd. Paul warned the church continually, pleading with them night and day to be on their guard against such deceivers.

From these passages, we see clearly that we are to distinguish between true and false teachers. How then are we to do that? First, as Paul instructs the Ephesians, we are to “no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming” (Ephesians 4:14). Rather, we are to “become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ” and we do this by “the knowledge of the Son of God” (v. 13). The knowledge of Christ can only be obtained through the Word of God, and it is by that Word that we distinguish between the true and the false.

In Matthew 7:15-20, Jesus offers some critical advice in discerning who is a false prophet: “Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. By their fruits you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, by their fruits you will recognize them.” Plainly stated, is the teacher’s life marked by a progressive conformity to the likeness of Christ? Is the teacher bearing the fruits of the Spirit? Just as only good trees produce good fruit, so do only true teachers of Christ display the fruit of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23), whereas false prophets and teachers display the acts of their sinful natures (Galatians 5:19-21). By these fruits, we recognize true and false teachers.

Second, does the teaching that is being presented conform to the message as proclaimed by the early church and the apostles? As Paul writes to the church in Galatia, “I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned! As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let him be eternally condemned!” These are harsh words indeed that Paul has for the false teachers, but eternal condemnation is what they store up for themselves until the day of God’s wrath (Romans 2:5-6).

The Apostle John tells us in his first epistle (1 John 4:1-6) how we are to discern which spirits are from God. “Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world. You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. They are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them. We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we recognize the Spirit of truth and the spirit of falsehood.”

It is of utmost importance that Christians are well grounded in the Scriptures so that they are able to discern which teachers speak from God and which are false in their proclamation. Only then can we reject what is false and “hold on to the good” (1 Thessalonians 5:21).

All so hindsight, heard these arguments from christians hundreds of times, its like Trump and RINO's (which would have sourced that stupid idea from the evangelicals).
Get this into your heads! Humans are fallible, even the best come a cropper.
You and your friends and your church will all do stupid things, I will too.

Every time a church pastor comes undone, all the other christians say, "he was a CINO", (Christian in name only, a professing christian, not genuine).

The fact is, christianity IS IMPOSSIBLE TO LIVE UP TO.!!!
We cannot attain the ideals, we strive and we fail.

So imperfect humans are saved into heaven because they mumble "I accept jesus"???
    Are CINO's saved?

  4. Amen! Well said! We strive and we fail. Believers have realized the peace that comes through spending time thinking and considering how Jesus satisfied the wrath of God for us. Do we feel ashamed, especially when we consider God's righteous standards we don't meet? Jesus was put to shame before Pontus Pilate, wrongly accused and mocked. Because He bore my shame, I will not be ashamed when I enter eternity. God's justice demands payment yet when He looks upon the anguish of His soul on the cross, His wrath will be appeased towards me. He bore wounds from the scourging and wounds from those who beat him and wounds from the cross, so that I would not come under His judgment.

As a result of the anguish of His soul, He shall see it and be satisfied; By His knowledge [of what He has accomplished] the Righteous One, My Servant, shall justify the many [making them righteous—upright before God, in right standing with Him], For He shall bear [the responsibility for] their sins.
Isaiah 53:11 Amplified Bible (Note: This was written hundreds of years before Jesus was born.)

When someone comes into such a relationship with God, they really love God in return. And the best way to show God their love is to do the things He likes. We still sin, but the desire of a Christian should be to want to live according to God's standards.

I haven't seen anywhere in the Bible a promise given that by mumbling "I accept Jesus" that they are born again. The way described in the Bible uses words like repentance, reconciliation, faith in Jesus as a Substitute, trust in His blood to cleanse from sin, a genuine recognition of Jesus as Lord and Savior.

A Christian needs to be careful who they listen to for spiritual guidance. The Biblical standard is high:

Now the overseer is to be above reproach, faithful to his wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. 1 Tim 3:2,3 NIV

Kind of like having a relationship and loving an imagination.
How do we know what he likes? We can only imagine what he likes.
You mean the standards of man / King James?

You say the bible is God's word, I say the bible is an account written by humans who believe they are inspired by God. But belief is not truth.

    Good post+ good points.
No where in the Bible does does mumbling the name of Jesus or Lord change anything, unless you actually mean it.
Looking @ Samson all his life most would say, no way would that judge ever go to heaven, but he is in Hebrew hall of fame[Hebrews , heavenly chapter 11]

Actually , you are right, ''Christianity is impossible to live''.
BUT with God all things are possible. Prayer helps also.
Most people don't throw away their $100 bills because some are fake, do you?? I don't.

  9. Nope. It is a real relationship. "We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. "(1Jn1:3)
We have to find it out and since the Bible is what God gave us to get to know Him, we use the Bible to determine what God likes. "Find out what pleases the Lord." Eph 5:10
The proof is in the prophesies. And other things.

I KNOW it is God's Word BECAUSE the BIBLE says so:
"All Scripture is inspired by God and beneficial for teaching, for rebuke, for correction, for training in righteousness." 2 Timothy 3:16

So, you will say that is circular reasoning. :D But it's not. It is the most logical and reasonable thing to believe and it is the truth, whether or not someone believes it. How do I know? Lots of reasons. One of them is that everything fits together. It describes the whys of suffering and the purpose we were created for (fellowship with God). It describes good and evil in terms that not only make sense, but can easily be seen for the truth of their existence. It describes people's attempt to be their own master yet people are like lost sheep without a shepherd, going their own way, because they lack God as their Shepherd. It describes historical events accurately as well as geographical locations when describing the ways that God intervened in the lives of our ancestors. There is no other book comparable to the Bible, spanning such a long period of time over which it was written, and so many different authors. I'm sure there are many other reasons. These were just the ones that came to mind as I was writing this.

But if anyone really wants to know if the Bible is from God, then they should read the Bible with a heart that desires to do what the God of the Bible wants them to do (which is mainly to be reconciled through Jesus.)

If anyone desires to do His will, he will know whether My teaching is from God or whether I speak on My own. John 7:17
