That's surprisingly good advice from the IRS (contact a CPA). I've heard (anecdotally) that when you call the IRS, they provide bad advice a fair amount of the time and if you follow that bad advice, the consequences are your responsibility. LOL. Talk about a rigged game! I contacted a CPA and when I got an idea of how much they would charge to prepare my Schedule D, I tried to do it myself. After dozens of hours working the wash sale violation carry forwards, I gave up because IMHO, it was humanly impossible with 1000's of trades to get it right. I went with a program called Tradelog and it did the trick for me.
